Would you avoid a car that has had the front bumper repainted? Seller says it was just because of scrapes under the chin due to steep driveways, etc., but I am concerned there could have been more to it. Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

check the engine seals for paint over spray.
check all the rubber seals for paint over spray.
rub your hands along the paint all around the car - if it feels like orange peel do not buy it.

if you see paint over spray on rubbers around the car door seals boot lid engine lid and all the jive do not but it. the car has been in an accident.

also check all the nuts and bolts around the engine if it has been tampered with do not buy it.

never buy any Ferrari that has been repainted.

Usually front bumper (and maybe more) is part of dealer prep to remove the stone chips these cars pick up.

My F430 purchase is currently having the whole front done by my Ferrari dealer before I collect it. Not a problem as long as done properly.

It will probably need bumper doing again by this time next year ;)

If a resprayed front bumper meant not buying a Ferrari, there would be thousands sitting on lots never to be sold. The only time you don't buy a repainted one is if it was because of accident damage. And even then if it was only a fender bender its not the end of the world. I wouldn't shy away from the car you happen to be looking at. The underside of the front bumper on mine looks like someone took a cheese grater to it. The car has never been in any type of accident.

Paint is just a candy coating. If it is changed by a professional then it could even be better than factory.

For instance if BRADAN painted it as part of their spectacular paint correction service, it would not devalue the vehicle or deter me from making a purchase.

If the repaint of the bumper was to fix a parking lot ding, no issues unless its on the carfax. If its on the carfax it could devalue the vehicle when you go to sell it.

If you're concerned that the seller isn't being honest with you, then perhaps you need to pass on the car or have a PPI done.

I'd add it's critical who does the PPI :). I had the seller's dealer do it, and it was a joke. Basically $400 down the drain. When I got the car, immediately noticed front bumper was repainted, as well as right door sill panel. Of course PPI didn't catch it. Or more likely, owner told them not to say anything. Either that or they're incompetent; take your pick :). And at least the right door sill panel would have been caught even by my yound daughter, who knows nothing about cars, due to clear 'bra' missing, fasteners stripped, and paint color not quite matched. Lesson learned.

But yes, I agree it's inevitable to have paint work at some point. The tricky part is to investigate it wasn't due to accident damage. That's why you need a thorough PPI done by a totally disinterested party.

I received a quote of $1100 to respray entire front end, hood and all. I have over 100 chips. I am holding off for now but will have this guy do the job later this year. He's in Delray.

Every 430 known to man has a scrape under the front...it's all part of the ownership.
It's a form of christening and initiation. LOL

    Nothing.

Not sure how it is in the USA, but here in the UK if you buy a Ferrari from a Ferrari dealer they have to do everything to make the car perfect. I made a list as long as my arm of things for them to address including front paint. Also you get a 2 year warranty with all approved used Ferrari here in the UK.

If your driving down the road and a rock gets kicked up and dings your fender, do you sell your car or get it fixed? Me I fix it, no big deal! If you drive your car which cars are made to do you are more than likely to need some type of repair at some time in this day and age with all the traffic construction etc.

As long as they didn't repaint the car to a completely different color it should be fine :)

paint work is done for two reasons:

    1. fix pre-existing rock chips / scrapes etc.
    2. collision

Resale value would be dependent on whether or not the car was in an accident of some type and also the quality of the paint work done
