ideal RPM when shifting ?

    Hi experts. Since I'm still new and learning. What is the ideal RPM I should aim for between gears 2,3,4,5 once engine warm ? Am I also correct that when cold I should keep it below 4000 except for 1st into 2nd ?

    Correct, stay below 3-4000rpm in all gears until the water temp comes up. I feel like throttle usage should dictate your shift points. Light throttle = lower rpms, max throttle = redline. At a minimum I try to shift so the revs never drop below 3000 (aprox 5000rpm upshift), that way I have power if I need it.

    But, it's a sports car so you should do whatever you think is the most fun.

    I shift around 3000-4000 RPM when casually driving around. Just 'feels' around the right rev range for the 348. :):)

    When Pap wants to be a naughty boy, he shifts near redline. ;);)

    Every time I drive mine at least once gets close to red line, i rarely check the RPM during shifting it's just a feel ...

    Oh, yeah. I dont watch the tacho either, but I shift around 3000-4000 RPM from what I have noticed.

    Same deal as you, feels about right. :D:D

    When casual driving, I shift at about 3000...and when I wanna have some fun, closer to redline :):)

    Casual driving should be shifting at 4500 and up. Shifting at lower revs continuously will kill your engine in the longrun. These cars have to be reved high every time your out in them. The main reasons for carbon all around the valves causing them to stick and lose compression is not only cheap low octane fuel but mostly not reving it high enough. Combine the 2 and your asking to spend big bucks sooner than later.

    Err, no: its the O.I.L. temperature that is the important temperature to watch. Wait for the oil temp to achieve 140dF before reving the crap out of it. Stay below 4000 RPMs until the oil temperature gauge moves off its low point.

    I don't disagree, I was only quoting the Ferrari manual for our 348 engined Mondial t. Practically speaking, once the water is up the oil is off of the peg. The Ferrari has steel cylinders in an aluminum block so I can see why the water temp would be important. The manual makes no mention of a minimum oil temp, only a maximum. Experience shows that the transmission is not completely smooth until the oil is around 140, so I also wait for this number to drive it hard.

    While our cars have the same engine (I assume the OP has a 348 as he made no mention of 6th gear) they do have different external water and oil setups. Perhaps the 348 manual makes reference to a min oil temp.

    What RPM to shift at?
    Well, the cutoff is at 8700, so I'd say about 8699.....
