I'm taking my GF up there for a weekend getaway. I was wondering if anyone familiar with the area could recommend their favorite restaurant and some things to do. Thank you.

I'll second Popeye's. It's right downtown. Are you guys going to go to a cool waterpark and go on the slides!!! Sorry, that was the dad in me............can't even remember what a romantic getaway is.............;)

    Popeye's? Really?
I've been twice and both times found it awful. It's convenient place to meet as it's so easily found but that is it's only merit in my opinion. Atmosphere is zero, service is zero, food,..... okay.
The old mansion converted to restaurant that is just down the street was very good when I last visited a decade ago. Don't recall the name.
A more rustic place but a "locals" restaurant is Fred's Wagon Wheel on county O in Delavan, good supper club fare.

If you are feeling flush, charter the Lorelei and have dinner catered onboard. http://www.cruiselakegeneva.com/lorelei.php I highly recommend this.

Gordy's has awesome ribs, but it's the opposite end of the lake from downtown. Rent a boat and make an evening out of it? The Grand Geneva has a couple fancy restaurants. Not sure if the food is actually "good", or if it's just high-priced to snag more convention dollars. As far as things to do, half the people shop downtown, the other half drink all day on their boats. (Just my impression, of course.)

Kirsch's restaurant for sure! Very nice views and the food was great.

Take the boat tour on the lake. Beautiful estates w/interesting stories and all those gorgeous wooden boats as well.

Yea, so, Popeye's is an institution but at the end of the day it isn't anything special. If you want a romantic and impressive dinner, Popeye's isn't it. If you want decent food that's quick and not expensive, that will do the trick.

One of the few gourmet restaurants is the Grandview in the Geneva Inn Hotel. The word says it all, the view is incredible and so is the food...

This sounds good. Will I be able to get in there this weekend? Is a reservation needed or can we wait even if it is for a while?

I'd like to thank everyone for their input. My GF and I ended up having a memorable weekend and we are already planning another trip back!

For those recommending Elkhart Lake, I'll definitely check it out sometime and I appreciate it.

That said, a big attraction to the Lake Geneva area was the short travel time. It is only an hour and a half away. We left on Friday night after work and got there early enough to settle in, grab a nice dinner, and relax. We also spent all day Sunday enjoying our day(despite bad weather) without a looming long drive home hanging over our shoulders - which made our last day more enjoyable. I also only went through only half a tank of gas for the entire trip!

A 3 hour drive to Elkhart Lake would have meant either leaving Saturday morning or getting in late on Friday night with little time to enjoy the night. I'm sure there are plenty of great reasons that make the longer drive worth it, but we'll have to save that spot for a future trip.

We stayed at Seven Oaks and enjoyed our experience thoroughly. You can check it out online - great little spot and the high praise and high rated reviews they receive are well deserved. Luxurious king sized bed, whirlpool, heated bathroom floors, heated towel rack, flat screen TV, various coffees and teas provided, breakfast provided to you at your door each morning, lots of privacy - all great touches.

We wanted a relaxing trip so most of our time was spent in our cottage, taking short drives around the lake, dining, and just walking around downtown or outside. We both came back from the trip more refreshed than we had been in years.

As far as dining, we were provided breakfast at our door each morning and on Saturday we skipped lunch and grabbed an early drink and fondue at the Baker House - great view and great atmosphere. We then went to the Geneva ChopHouse for dinner since we wanted to checkout that resort and area. We sat outside and enjoyed a great dinner and fantastic view overlooking the golf course and area. I wouldn't put the steak in my "top places," but there were also no complaints. My filet was cooked to perfection and the service was stellar.

Overall, we didn't dine out as much as I thought we would since we had plenty of food and snacks back at our cottage, but we did drive past Geno's suggestion - Grandview in the Geneva Inn Hotel - and the view and menu are definitely something we are excited to try out when we go back and are more hungry.

I'll try to post some pictures of this weekend when I get a chance. Thanks again for all of the suggestions.
