I like driving my 348 w/o the targa but lately with tornados, severe thunderstorms and daily pop up storms I'm not willing to leave the targa at home. Apparently whomever designed the top to go behind the seats was about 5 and a half feet tall!:) Has anyone ever fabricated a top that you could fold up and store in the front compartment?

    5'7'', perfect fit ;)

I was thinking the same thing when I threw the top back for the first time. An inch or two more and I wouldn't be able to drive. One of the short list of perks for being average height!

I always thought it would be great to have the folding targa top as well. Keep it in the car "just in case" so as to not always have to carry the hard top behind the seats.

When Eric B's top popped up for sale (see previous link), I was interested. When he made me an offer I couldn't refuse, I jumped on it. I picked up the top on Monday.

Imagine my surprise when I got home and figured out that the top, when folded, does not fit in the car -- anywhere. Well not entirely true, you could stick it in the passenger seat, but that limits options for, er, passengers.

The only place it actually will fit in the car is -- wait for it -- behind the seats in the fully deployed configuration. Why did they even bother to make it fold?

So now in essence I've got a second top to just keep behind the seats. At least I don't have to deal with stowing it and unstowing it frequently.

In what direction does it fold? It looks like it does it along the length.

What you'd need is for it to fold in half along the width, then it might stand a chance of fitting in the trunk at the front. It does seem like this is an opportunity for an engineering solution to burst forth. I'm sure it could be done. :)

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Mine fits on the shelf behind the seats. It looks a little unruly but fits fine. I'm considering modifying a ski bag that came with my Audi to contain the roof. (make it prettier on that shelf)

Indeed, mine fits perfectly on the "shelf" behind the seats. I'm 6'8", so taking the hardtop is impossible (other than the place it's meant to be).

Sitting on the carpeted portion? Any chance you have a picture to show how you fit it in there?

The car is away for a few days but I'll snap a few when she comes home.

Is this a joke? On the shelf on top of the fuel tank, just about 10 inches below the top of the headrests of the chairs.

Not a joke. The thing is not exactly compact when folded. Are you supposed to remove the side bolsters from the top when you fold it? I didn't do that -- maybe that would allow it to fold more tightly.

Also, in the states we have the center mounted shoulder harnesses to deal with.

When I have some time, I'll go out and play with it some more...

Eric (or others that possess this trendy folding jewel), if you get the chance I would love some pictures of the bottom of the top as if I can't buy one maybe I can fabricate one.

    Thanks,
    Dave

I'll post some pics next week if not available by that time. She's out for a major at the moment.

It fits on the shelf behind the seats with just a little fiddling.

    Thanks for straightening me out.

I had one for my 348, and sold it. It was simply not as practical as I thought it would be.

Anybody interested, I have a folding top for sale for a nice Brotherhood-price. Since I have a 348 spider it is no use for me.

Wait -- you mean these targa tops are supposed to be waterproof?? :)

I may be interested. If nothing else, it's an unusual piece to have with the car.

Exactly; the "waterproof" folding targa roof.

I willing to sell for cost-price; 1700 dollar

I see the date on this post and doubt you still have the folding targa top but wanted to check to be sure. I will buy it if you still have it. Please advise.\

    Thanks

I actually purchased Daniel's cloth top roof almost ten years ago for my 355. The latches in the front are positioned a little differently than in the 348 and they use different latches. I still have the 348 latches and have purchased new 355 latches (~$500 each!), but haven't modified where they attach on the roof to fit a 355. The unit's been in storage in my garage for the last nine years. Probably wouldn't sell unless it were for the right price. Feel free to PM me if interested.
