Aston built, er badge engineered their little city car to get around fuel economy regulations. smart move, IMO. however, I've never heard of anyone actually buying one....

so does anyone have one? if so, what are your impressions? what did you cross-shop (Mini Cooper, Fiat 500, Fiat Panda, etc)?

You know what they should do?

    Take this idea to extreme.

Rebadge some tiny Asian car that gets 80 MPG and give it away with every real car.

The buyer can throw it away, or give it to The Help.

Instantly, the average fleet fuel mileage is 40.

I'm not a math major, but I think it would be even higher than 40 (but not much!). :)

It's just a Toyota IQ with a bodykit and different badges on it. ;)

I actually test drove the entry-level Toyota IQ and was reasonably impressed with it. If you get the one with the engine upgrade (i.e. the identical car as the Cygnet) then the extra nippiness would be great. If you're interested in the Cygnet, just get one of those instead - same car for a heck of a lot less money. As far as I know, all the differences as cosmetic and not mechanical. :)

    All the best,
    Andrew.

not a bad idea... "look, Jeeves, an Aston Martin for you as well" :D

actually, that's part of my question; are the fuel economy standards theoretical (ie not based on actual vehicle sales), or do they have to actually sell X number of Cygnets to offset all those sports cars?

I saw 2 in London. Ugly thing. You really have to be a brand whore or have so much money that it actually hurts to buy that thing.

Even if you did have one who on here would admit to such a thing?

Maybe the chances would be better on a Prius board?

I actually think it's a very clever solution to the euro corporate emissions standards, if not a particularly well executed solution.

I just find it odd that I've never seen or heard of one outside of magazines and AM press materials.

perhaps they should give them away with the purchase of a "real" Aston...

Why would you want a 93hp runabout when the Abarth 500 is due out next year? Even the regular 500 makes more sense.

I've been in and test driven the Toyota IQ (essentially this car before someone stuck Aston Martin badges on it) and it's honestly not a bad car.

As a runabout, I would actually prefer the Toyota IQ to the Fiat 500 as the interior of the 500 feels very plasticy. I really don't understand why so many people think the 500 is a good car... it really isn't. As a nippy runabout, the MINI is far superior, and as a small 4-seater the Toyota IQ is better. The interior on both the MINI and Toyota feel more durable and luxurious. I just don't "get" the new 500 as anything other than a bit of nostalgia for people who may have owned an original 500.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

I think the IQ in its original form makes more sense than the Cygnet. I'm not buying the badge engineering since AM actually gets complete cars from Toyota before they start the make over.

That is such a sad state of affairs. If people want good gas milage cars they will buy them but don't force manufacturers to build what lawmakers want. And for AM to use the word bespoke in the first sentence is just silly. Now where did I put my Prada flip-flops?

They need to import them to California ;)

Are Rolls Royce, Bentley, Ferrari having to meet the same fleet average requirements?

Hasn't the Abarth 500 been out for two years now?

Having test driven the IQ and the Abarth, there is no comparison.

Have had my Abarth for over a year and love it and streets ahead of any Toyota.

The Toyota showroom of today is like "waiting for Godo!"

Where have the MR2's, Celica's and Supra's gone?

Just had the Abrath modded to around 200 BHP and its just fantastic.

Should keep me amused until the 12C arrives, but I won't mention that on this site.
