almost, not to derail, schwinn had some great moments during the paramount era where they were as a good as the high end italian stuff that was coming out.

    Hence the "wannabe" part.
In my day Schwinns were like Caddys, Raleighs like Jags.

At a car show filled with mostly American hot rods and lowriders, in which I had the only Ferrari but a Ford GT40 won "Most Exotic":

    Guy: What year's that Ferrari?
    Me: 1982.
Guy: Oh, then it's really just a Fiat.
Me: Fiat has held a majority stake in Ferrari since 1969.
Guy: Really? I thought it was just during the late 70's and early 80's.
Me: Maybe you're thinking of the AMF years of Harley-Davidson.
Guy: Well, it's really just a Fiat.

that does not look like a Disney event, yet the mouse ears and the children are clearly in the background.

Several young kids have said "nice Mustang" when they see the shields.

And most people think that it's Magnum's car, but that's okay because at least the 328 and 308 used the same basic body, and I'm sure that Magnum would have been in a 328 if the TV series had lasted a few more years.

I'm sure he would have been, as there were three different incarnations of the 308 used in the show. (Amazing that so few people caught the differences!)

I've heard it said that Magnum "should" have driven a 288, but I disagree: The 308, especially in GTS form, is the best Hawaii car ever, and though I personally prefer the GTB for myself the open top is perfect for the tropical climate as well as for allowing the audience to actually see the star of the show in the driver's seat. (And I've also heard that Selleck is so tall that he can't even drive a GTB, at least not comfortably.)

But whenever someone asks if my 308 is "a Magnum car" I always respond, "No; this is a GTB," and let them wonder. . . ;)

I remember taking a drive in the Texas hill country and some young local kids came up and told me I had the coolest car in Bandera (pop. 1,200). I thanked them and let them sit behind the wheel and great time was had by all.

The usual comment I get is how much did it cost. It used to annoy me. Now, I usually tell them it cost me nothing. Then after pausing for the open jawed neanderthal look, I tell them I didn't pay anything because I stole it from Darth Vader. They laugh and we talk about the car.

Two teen aged boys today stopped to photograph the car and asked me: "How fast does it go?"

Followed up with "How much money do you make?"

    Kids.
