It's too late to call you tonight, so give me a call tomorrow Tuesday. I've got an idea for this knob (they are the same as my car) that might solve it. The only part I'm uncertain about is the knurl.

Those look cast with the knurl machined into them? Or maybe just cast. Note the porosity in the tops.

Bob, The finished knob has a lot of machine tool striation, so i think machined from stock. Dont know why Jacques photo shows voids. These knobs pictured have been somewhat polished on a wheel , but the tool marks are still quite visable.

It would be nice to know how to describe the knurl pattern. Anyone fluent in knurl description other than fine, medium, coarse.
How do you measure an existing knurl to properly describe it for duplication?

Now that i look more closely at Jacques picture(with the yellow background), this set of knobs have been machined off and reknurled, at least I think so. And that is not a void, it has to do with the reknurling process and holding the knob, IMHO.

Thanks Alberto, These are exactly the same as 1021! I think we can get a variety of knurl options that would be acceptable from a good machine shop.

Cleaned the trunk area to the metal and on removal of the vinyl floor covering you will find the original pin recepticles pushed in to the trunk floor after the floor vinyl had been installed. The two trunk panels using this "pin mount at the bottom" are the left (brake booster) panel and the rear (tailight) panel. So there are four in use in a 400 2+2 trunk area. Possibly others elsewhere.

I dont have any real good photos of OEM trunk panels.....Fred i thought you had more photos of 1354 details
    Cheers
    Craig
PS - anybody have a good photo of the vinyl floor in a 400 2+2? Besides being glued in place, the vinyl is held by thes plugs and the two carpet snaps found only at the rear. This vinyl flooring tends to turn up at the rear and extend up into the tailight area, yes?

    BIZZARRINI-LAMBORGHINI TARGA

Up for auction is a very unique “one off” creation. This is a Bizzarrini targa that was built on a Lamborghini 400GT chassis in Livorno Italy by Giancarlo Reali.

The body is one of the fiber bodies that was remaining from the factory and would have been a GT America if it were completed at the Bizzarrini factory. Due to the bankruptcy, Bizzarrini was no longer able to produce cars under his own name. Therefore this body was ingeniously mated to a 400GT.

Nice one, Craig. 2 wipers "probably" means US car, "probably" after c. 700 (Mine's 655 w single wiper, fwiw)

    ie: no idea :)

    Fred

PS: Notice the Aston Martin behind, if that's an indication of period, then this is a Touring car, which means before c.1000 or so. So maybe between chassis 700 and 1000. If the blue is factory, then maybe find on this list:

    http://www.400gt.com/misc/AutoDigest22h.jpg

    616 Blue Notte USA, NY
    676 Blue Notte USA, California
    715 Blue Notte USA, NY
    790 Blue Notte France
    880 Blue Notte Italy
    892 Blue Notte Italy
    907 881 Blue Notte France
    982 Blue Notte Italy
    1057 Blue Notte USA, NY
    1063 Blue Notte USA, NY

So if we're going with the "2 wipers = USA" and Touring and Factory Correct Color....then maybe 676 or 715
But this is just a very wild guess! :)

i thought 0769 was single wiper however, so maybe the same color is the only thing i am seeing

    Wow, nice call Craig!

But...looks like a single-wiper "clone" to me. And no rear bumper over-riders, and different seats.

But sheesh -- looks like the same car in so many other ways!

    Who knows. Not I. :)

    Fred

PS: And of course you can't hide that jacked-up (aka: "stock") rear suspension, meant to level things out for the +2's. That's also a difference between the 2 cars.

Yeah, that's the stock stance all right. These were "hurry up!"-ed cars and the jacked up rear is just one sign of that, and the reason Wallace stopped liking them. Thrown together to please the consumer, with the jacked up rears and crazy ac setups.

Looks like a different car to me in a number of ways...but yes, it is blue. :-D

This is right around when the Miura came out and you can only imagine what was going on at the factory, suddenly split in two by the projects. All the excitement on the Miura cars at this point, and the 2+2's being beaten into a product meant to please the original businessmen Ferruccio was aiming at.

Interesting times. I love my 2+2, but have converted it to what I was looking for which is a more "pure" ride. I've lowered the rear end, taken out the ac and changed the headlights back to oval -- all of this 25 years ago, so nothing new for me.

    Cheers,

    Fred

Fred, I am not so sure these were quickly assembled Lamborghini. I see a lot of sophisticated design care from the body contractor Touring/Marazzi to get a very nice sheetmetal body and a very nice 60's interior in leather. Yes, i see the rear is slightly preloaded for additional weight of passengers, doesnt look out of place at all, kinda nice actually. Headlites and wipers simply conforming to worldwide regulations.
I think the 350/400GT 2+2 has the most desirable "looks" of any of the Lamborghini and Ferrari GT cars of the 60's and 70's.
    Cheers

    Hi Craig,

It's more the direction that Ferruccio was going with the GT cars that Wallace didn't like... that is, after the 350GT.

Whatever, I love mine, and it runs like a Swiss watch and rides like a Bentley. Very few (ie: no) cars could match that at the time. It was waaaaay ahead of everybody.

In many ways, a milestone car.

    Fred

    >>
The man who left his mark on every Lamborghini built through '75 has firm opinions on the entire range, and his criticisms begin well before the change of owners. "Well, a 2 +2 was a mistake. I think the first car, the 350, made a lot more sense than any of the other 2 + 2s or the mediocre cars that followed.

"Later on, the Isleros and Jaramas someone's crazy marketing ideas. I don't think Lamborghini had or still don't think they have any commercial direction as to what the hell the market wants or what people really want. You're pushing these 2+2s off onto people with badly built bodywork. The quality of the creature comforts and the body construction and so forth was abominable. Just innumerable little things wererft right, and it takes a lot of money to put them right."
    <<

So maybe, Craig, he was more talking about the cars AFTER the 400. I do think that Touring did a good job -- mine is a Touring car.

    Fred,
I believe Bob was unhappy with the marketing direction to produce a bread and butter, mass appeal, 2+2 cars (8 and 12) after the Miura had run its course for milestone Lamborghini publicity and profits.
I am afraid without this diverse marketing direction, as much as some would complain about it, Lamborghini would have not produced after 1974. While there may have been some quality issues, my experience shows them all to be of minor concern...and as a vintage car now it is really a moot point. I certainly enjoy all the models Lamborghini was bold enough to put into production.
Most Ferrari vintage models are forgetable body styles, Maserati I cant think of many (if any) that has design i desire, but Lamborghini seems to have plenty.
    Just my thoughts
    Craig
