I would like a gadget for reading books AND browsing the web - nothing else (no phone, camera, GPS, etc rubbish) and I don't need colour for the web browser either. I like the Kindle e-ink for reading, but their browser is text-only at this point. Anyone know of an alternative (NOT ipad - too complicated/expensive/big and I don't like the no-cover idea; kindle is the right size) OR if the next generation Kindle is likely to do this? Can Amazon e-books be downloaded to an ordinary notebook? Ta in advance...

I have the current Kindle and you can browse any websites and its not text only. It does not have a mouse so a pain to browse on a regular basis but fine for occasional browsing. You can sync the books with you iPhone as well which is cool, so you can read them on the Kindle or iphone. Not sure about downloading to an ordinary notebook. I have the 3G one which is free internet access

iPad isn't complicated and can be fitted with a cover. It's not much bigger than a Kindle (which I still love) but does so much more.

Lol! There aren't any 1 or 2 cent pieces in Aus any more and you haven't got your bill up to 5c yet!

As an aside - still NO ONE has solved my 'semaphore timeout' problem...

Thanks for this sensible comment Shack! Odd that the sales website was where I got the 'text only' info from... Can you not plug a mouse into the USB port?

I have not tried the mouse in USB port. The browsing speed was not that great either as I think the GPRS connection speed is slow. May be better under WiFi but truthfully its a eBook reader rather than a general device

Karen, a freeware program called Calibre (calibre-ebook.com) can convert e-books from any format to any device. Buy a cheap tablet and away you go. Also gets you access to zillions of free books outside of the Amazon domain.

btw, I have the current Kindle and I find the browser OK over Wifi, you soon get the hang of navigating without a mouse. Its very clunky compared to an ipad, but 3 months battery life vs. a few days and the Kindle screen works better in daylight and is less eye strain when reading.

If you're buying a Kindle, get it shipped to someone in the US (the website will assume you're american) as the Aus version has a restricted book list on Amazon. yet another way we are screwed by the middlemen here.

Thanks Ian, I'd thought of the notebook thing but I really like the E-ink so will think further in light of what you and Shack have said. Thanks guys!
