I am with Verizon, and the "new every two" deal was up a couple of months ago. They have a few 4G phones available, but every one of them has reviews slamming battery life.

For 3G, of course the I-Phone 4 is available, along with the Droid X and HTC Incredible.

I just wonder if I went ahead and bought a 3G phone now, would I be regretting it in a year from now when 4G is very much the norm? Or if I bought a 4G phone now, would I regret not waiting for the I-Phone 5 or the Motorola Droid Bionic?

I don't use my phone constantly, so I don't know if having 4G over 3G would really matter much to me. The smart 3G phones seemed pretty fast to me.

    Thoughts?

If you go with the iPhone, apple usually allows buyers to get the subsidized price every year. This isn't guaranteed but an early upgrade usually ends up happening. The next iPhone should be out in September.

I just got the HTC thunderbolt. I wanted to wait until later in the year to get a phone my original Droid was becoming impossible to charge, so my hands were tied.

I haven't had enough time to evaluate the battery life,, but the phone is phenomenal. Houston seems to be completely 4G, and I'm currently in Austin this weekend which seems to only be 3G so I'm able to test in different modes.

Both modes are incredibly quick using data. I mean night and day from my old phone, and telephone itself is much more responsive. The good thing about 4G is that I can now use data and voice at the same time. I haven't used it yet.

I'm a senior sales rep at Verizon and I am also using the Thunderbolt as my demo phone. I would recommend going with a 4g phone now. My opinion is that once we get our 4g network up and running nationwide you will begin to see a lot of applications that will make 4g much more appealing. Still no word as to when the Iphone 5 will be out. It's a really interesting time to be buying (and selling lol) phones due to the network upgrades. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.

If your current phone is still functional and you are happy with it... it may not be a bad move to give it a little more time for the new 4g networks to get ironed out and the phones like the Thunderbolt to get updated before moving into that arena.

The DroidX is a great phone (I'm on it), but the hardware is starting to age a bit. The X2 is out, but I've heard mixed reviews on it.

Honestly, I would wait until there is a 4g phone out there where the battery life isn't absolute crap. My friends 4g Thunderbolt charges overnight and he still has to carry his charger with him because the battery will crap out at some point during the day.

How often are you charging that Thunderbolt?

How does the Thunderbolt compare to the Revolution by LG, or the DROID CHARGE by Samsung, feature-wise and functionality-wise, or are they all basically the same? Which one has the best battery life, or are they all crap?

The phone setup is what matters from what I have seen with the Thunderbolt. When I first got mine I basically had it set up with the location settings turned on and everything set to sync frequently. I activated it with a full battery at 11am and by 4pm it was almost dead. You can adjust it though and once you get through the inital first few days when I was really playing with it I now get a full day with "normal" use.

The Revolution looks like its going to be a great phone. I sold one yesterday and the girl seems to love it. Both the Charge and the Revolution are new phones but I have not heard of any battery problems yet. I'm not in a 4g market but I have used it when I travel to one. It's pretty amazing compared to 3g. My recommendation would be the Revolution for now.

The Charge still has a huge screen but apparently unparalleled battery life for a 4G phone.

The Revolution looks a lot sexier, but I haven't heard much else about it in terms of battery.

Battery life seems to be a big problem with Verizon's 4G phones, but the Charge looks pretty sweet to me!

Well I cannot add much to the conversation about 3G vs 4G as neither is available here in Central MT. But I am changing carriers from Verizon to t-mobile as that is the carrier that my daughter is on and I can talk to her with out using up all of her mins.

I was a Verizon customer for many years - IMHO, your best bet is to always upgrade as soon as possible. Technology is evolving so rapidly that you will always have an "older" phone 6 months after you get it. Besides, if you decide to upgrade again 1 year from now, the upgrade costs pale in comparison to your monthly fees, so in that sense, it's really more of a mental hurdle then a true cost barrier.

The Charge and Revolution are nice...I am at the new every 2 as well but I am going to wait and see what they come up with as far as a dual core 4G phone.

If I end up waiting, it would be for either the I-Phone 5, or the Motorola Bionic, which I believe is dual-core. I just wish I'd have some kind of idea when it will finally be available, and for how much. Right now, with Verizon's incentive, I can buy the Samsung for something like $219, which is about as high as I would ever care to spend on a phone. If the Bionic comes out, and it is far more than that, which I anticipate it will be, then I'd probably pass on it.

When you upgrade, do you go no contract, 1 yr contract, or 2 year contract?

IIRC, it's extremely rare for Verizon to offer any phone for >$200 if you sign sign a new / renew a 2 yr contract.

The highest we usually go is 299.99 with a 2 year contract. We stopped doing one year contracts about 2 months ago due to the fact we hardly ever had anybody go with them.

Droid Bionic is supposed to be a good phone. I'm not sure why they keep pushing back the release date because I've been hearing a lot about it for quite some time. I'm curious to see how battery life is running a dual core processor on a 4g network.

Okay, I took the plunge and ordered a DROID CHARGE by Samsung yesterday, which I should receive tomorrow.

I have to say, trying to get anything done on the Verizon website is the most infuriating and frustrating thing ever! It's hard to believe that such a large company can't get their site right. When I went to select the phone, it showed the price as $219, which is with my $30 discount applied. When I took the steps towards checkout, the price was showing $249. The moron who I IMed with on the site told me it was a site error. I told him that this is the price that has been showing for a couple of months now, and that if it was an error on the site, it really shouldn't take that long to correct it. I got so frustrated that I just ended up calling, and they were very helpful, and honored the price I had been given.

So far, I am liking the new phone. It's just too bad there's no 4G where I live, but there is where I work.

There is so much to learn on this phone, so much it can do.

    Awesome!

Once you start to get the hang of it you will definitely love your phone.

The Android OS allows you to do so much customization its incredible. For instance, if you don't like the way your keyboard works, there's atleast 5 different alternative keyboards available.

Don't like how the phone handles your calendar? There's a bazillion different alternatives.

Don't like the Email client? Swap it out for another one.

Don't think the internet browser is fast enough? Go download Dolphin HD, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Need an app that allows you to read OBDII codes on the fly w/ a bluetooth adapter? Go download Torque.

Still loving the new phone. My only issue is the Bluetooth earpiece I was using with my old phone is a piece of junk with this new phone. For whatever reason, the volume just doesn't go high enough. Also, when giving voice commands, it rarely gets what I am saying right.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

It could be you need a new headset. I never use voice, but have played with it on texting and it seems to work fine on my thunderbolt.

Since you.have no 4g right now have you switched to cdma completely? 4g has been acting funny for a few weeks so I switched to cdma only and my battery life has been a lot better. Settings>Wireless & Networks>Network Mode.
