Nothing serious - nobody was hurt and the damage looks to be just paint. I was on Chicago Ave last night and some ****** ran a red light. Fortunately I saw him going through so I was able to slam on my brakes but the collision was unavoidable. The front left of my car hit the rear panel on his passenger side. The guy took one look at me and floored it so I turned and followed him for a block, long enough to get his license plate. I'm guessing he was drunk so he'd rather have a hit & run charge than a DUI. I cannot believe there were no cops at Chicago & State that night! They're always there. I had a passenger and I also got the names & numbers of 3 witnesses.

If he had just pulled over, we would've seen that the damage was not bad and I would've been cool about it. But the fact that he ran is pissing me off and I want to get him in trouble. I was wondering, first of all, if this would affect my insurance premiums? And second, even if he paid to fix the car and my premiums did not go up, would filing a report against him possibly hurt the resale value of my car? Or is it possible for me to get some kind of recompense for that as well? Thanks

Don't have the answer - only glad you are well. Stephanie might be able to give you an idea, insurance-wise.

    Thanks wax and Dino.

I went to the police dept to file a report. They looked up the license plate and told me the car it belonged to had been impounded since May, so filing a report would be useless. They said that I had probably gotten the plate wrong by a letter or something. I'm 105% sure I got the correct plate.

The damage is only paint so I'm not concerned about paying to fix it myself, but I'm pissed off the guy's getting away with it. Somebody told me he wouldn't be surprised if the police lied about it being impounded so that they wouldn't have to deal with it - I sure hope that's not true.

Paperwork behind for the car being released or someone at the impound lot borrowing a plate, or car. Nah, that wouldn't happen.
Did the registration match the car you hit/hit you?

I was calm enough to get the plate but forgot to note the make/model. I knew it was a maroon 4-door sedan, and I thought it was either a new Taurus or an Accord. When I went to the police dept I told them that it was a maroon sedan but I didn't know the model. They told me the plate belonged to a Ford Taurus but the color wasn't noted. Now that I think about it - when do they ever not record the color? Ugh. Oh well. I'm just grateful my car isn't badly damaged and nobody was hurt.

Don't worry about resale value if it's only paint damage.

Were you thinking of selling the car? If so, don't expect to make a profit.; it's not in the purchase equation!

Illinois has been putting the color on the vehicle registration for about 2 years now. I do still run plates in which the color is not attached, but not often. Also, if the car belongs in a fleet (ComEd car, a rental, etc.) they don't have the color noted quite often. Also, it is possible that there is a hit on the registration that the vehicle shows IMPOUNDED and it's driving around. Chicago PD is notorious for not removing the notation on those. I've even pulled people out of reported stolen cars at gunpoint only to find it was a Chicago steal that they never removed when the car was recovered. To me, you probably did get the right plate and it was driving around. What department did you file the report with?..............please don't say Chicago, please don't say Chicago, please don't say Chicago.......

Webby, my heart goes out to you and your situation. Glad you are alright. Just as easily could have been anyone of us in the city. A lot of these jack***es drive like maniacs. I feel as if you could get away with just about anything while driving in this city! Best of luck, I hope everything works out!
