I'd like to get a `correct' Italian license plate and plate holder/frame for my Euro 71 GT for when I show the car.

    1) Which, if either of these plates is `correct' (see pics)

    2) What kind of plate holder/frame was correct? I've seen ref's to stainless steel, or black on McCann's or TRutlands.

No, I'm looking for the square plate frames used for Dino's in Italy...that would fit the square style license plates in my original post. All those in your pics are US version.

Actually, the top one (red) is a US model (note recessed side markers) and the bottom one (yellow) is I don't know what since it has Euro style side markers in rear qtr panel where they don't belong (in addition to front side location).

    5ave,

That isn't a "correct" US Spec plate surround.

    Hi RonG,
I've seen two types of Euro number plate surround. Apparently, the one-piece style is original; the eight-piece item was more common, especially in Italy. The original is depicted in the Bodywork Spare Parts Catalog, Tav./Tavola 110, N. Fig. 18.

    Superformance (has both)

"Number Plate Surround Stainless as original 24604090 £89.95" (See atch pic)

"Ferrari 246 Dino (1975) - REAR NUMBER PLATE SURROUND
    Part No. 251-74-512-02 - PATTERN European Spec...In Stock £95"

FerrParts doesn't show it as available, but they have the technology to get you one.

I imagine that GT Car Parts in Phoenix might have 'em, too.

There likely are other sources; these are just a few that come to mind.

As for the number plates, I believe that they're both period-correct styles. The white/black type was in use from 1927 to 1976. I sourced that from a very interesting read:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_registration_plates_of_Italy. I've attached a pic of the normal number plate with the 8-pc. surround.
The Prova version was, of course, for road tests only.

    Cheers,
    Coop

I saw that wikipedia page too.

What could possibly justify the huge price for the DinoParts item...I mean $724 for a plat frame??!!!!

I went ahead and ordered one from McCann's...only $25, so worth trying it.

20.30.11 REAR NUMBER PLATE FRAME, 275GTB/365GTB4/DINO EURO VERSION (SCAGLIETTI #)(NLA) $25.00

I'll order the plate once I get the frame to make sure dimensions really are the same. I'll use provincial code MI since my Dino's 1st owner lived in Milano.

Thanks for the very thorough reply! Very informative.

'great find at McCann's! I looked there & couldn't crack the code. I imagine it's the 8-piece gem. If it is, I'll order one, too. That's the style that was on my Euro car; the surround was tweaked last year, so I'll gladly get a replacement.
    Thanks for returning the favor,
    Coop

Are you saying the black one on the red US car is incorrect?

The US Spec cars had a chrome plate surround. Do you have better pictures of what is on your car?

Ok, so I got the cheapo old style Euro frame and was about to order a Euro plate (see my post at start of thread). But before I plop down $80-100 for a Euro plate, I realized I don't know how it is to mount to the car. Do old style Euro plates have mounting points somewhere near the vertical center of the plate itself because the frame certainly can't be used with the plate bracket I have (see pic). Like I said, a dumb Yank question, but I've never seen an old style Euro plate up close.
