My friend and I have been working several weekends on his "flying mirror" Testarossa, which would not shift and only grind the gears (awful sound ...). It appears that a couple of gears (1st and 2nd) have been damaged apparently as the result of metal fatigue and growing axial misallignment of these gears... See pictures below.

Here are a couple of questions for fellow FChatters:
    * Has anybody had this exact problem before ?
    * Has anybody found an affordable source, or a manufacturer of these gears?
    * Does anybody have a spare 1st or 2nd gears collecting dust on a shelf in their garage, that I could buy?

I think Eurospares had a couple of used gear sets for a 512TR which might fit at a reasonable cost.

    Never seen that before.

I was just reading the thread on the $36k TR. Your pictures answered my question. How many miles did the car have on it at the transmission failures?

i build race car gear boxs in my spare time for GT1/TransAm and V8 race cars and i have seen a lot worse just looking at the photos if that is all the damage there is that box is in good condition with no wear on the syncros keys that are on the gears still have there sharp points just that a few teeth have broken off from some shrapnel that has gone through the box looks like you need a lay shaft a couple of gears and some bearings, the box is built by colotti in italy for ferrari and other italian super cars so there is a good chance that the gears are a generic part youll have to count the teeth just to make shore that you have the right gear ratio when asking people for the parts try looking on ebay uk there are some traders that service ferraris or some one might give you a lead to parts and last time i look at testarossa parts there was 2 used engines for sale

Can the damaged gear teeth be built up by welding and remachined?......Mark

    Mark,

Actually, I have thought of this too and enquired from several gear manufacturers in Houston that manufacture gears and whole transmissions for oil-drilling industry in Texas, but the answer was NO... Such types of repairs will be very unreliable and will not last.

The process of gear manufacturing apparently involves machining the gears from specially treated metal alloy followed by an additional heat treatment and a follow-up re-surfacing of heat-treated parts (machining those gears again to the required dimensions and tolerances).

    Cheers.

I find that information provided to you Juri, counter intuitive as a proper weld is in actuality stronger than the surrounding metal. That is why in a properly executed weld, the surrounding metal/s will fail prior to the weld. I applaud your resolve in fixing the transmission.....Mark

    Mark,

Welding is certainly not my area of expertise. In my response to your suggestion, I relayed the information I got from several gear manufacturers in Houston.
I may have been misinformed... Can you recommend a welding expert who can properly weld the damaged gear teeth so that those could be re-machined to the original specifications?

    Curious me...

Gears can't be welded and last unless it's some old manure spreader. An automotive gearbox is a different story. If the gears are too hard they fracture, too soft they wear out. If you repair one gear, is it now harder or softer than the gear it mates with? Different hardnesses of mating gears will destroy each other. Just buy gears and move on, theyre out there. I needed 4th and 5th gears for a boxer gearbox I'm building right now. Had to buy both gears for both shafts, that's life. I got them used but they're mint and the price was reasonable.

    Newman,

Thank you for the explanation and suggestion. I came to the same conclusion and will move on with buying these gears from UK. After further research it appears that whe gears I need are a reverse gear (the smaller one) and the corresponding synchroniser gear (the larger one).

    Cheers.

Don't need anything now, but you never know: a regular source would certainly come in handy.

Ferrari wrecking is a specialty. The best wrecking yard I know is in Phoenix Arizona: GT Car Parts (623)780-2200. Bill is a great source for new and especially classic Italian vehicles!

    Hope this helps Juri........Mark

While the surface wear on the one gear looks like a hardening treatment might have failed (leading to the scenario Newman describes) it certainly looks like debris was travelling around in the gearbox to break the teeth off of the other gear???

Looks like superformance has plenty of them.'

Might check with FerrParts in Cali, I have dealt with them successfully on 308GTB bits...
