NASCAR 2011

I chose Mears based on a) he's a California guy and they tend to step it up when they race in CA (how many times have Johnson and Gordon won at Fontana? and R. Gordon seems to do the same), and b) he has more road racing experience than most of the C list guys, except for Simo and Said, who are basically one-offs.

C- list drivers are a pretty narrow field, once you discount the "go or go home" and "start and park" guys. and, of course, assuming you pick the right Keselowski.

 

Next up, crapshoot #4 on the year.

only cuaght the last 20 or so of the NW race, but it was a good one. Danica is going to end up winning one of these plate races.

glad to see Trevor up front for the Cup race, he's had a tough few months after the Daytona 500.

why don't they just make the race a series of green white checkers? would save a fortune on gas and tires...

 

Wait! Isn't that what NASCAR is already?

Imagine the outcry in any other series (F-1, Indy Car,
ALMS, MotoGP, etc.) race after race a single shunt
took out half of the field. Demands by the media and
fans alike would be for heads to roll, reconfiguraton of
circuits, updated safety, etc.

Only in NASCAR is this not only tolerated but celebrated
by media and fans in the name of "close racing".

So, for 158 laps we had some decent racing, and YOU don't like it because (obviously) someone you like was taken out?

The race was a pretty decent one, and if you will notice, those crashes would have happened anywhere, in any form of racing, when you are at THAT speed and are driving THAT close to each other, side-by-side, it's almost inevitable, and there really is nothing anyone can do about it, what do you want them to do, race single-file, just like in F1? (yawn)

A lot of folks don't like nascar racing, but it is what it is: racing, and it's a helluva lot better RACE-WISE than any other form of 'racing', all the series you named are basically follow-the-leader. You cannot compare it to any other form of racing, if it was LIKE the kind of racing you 'like', it would be boring as hell and NOBODY would watch, kinda like F1 in the USA.

Did you even listen to Mark Martin? He admitted he thought he had Logano cleared - he didn't - that's what caused one of the wrecks. 'Stuff' happens, even if you are the most experienced guy out there.

Oh - and wrecks are not 'celebrated by media and fans': far from it - everyone wants everyone to finish, not wreck.
That would be like me saying everyone in the 60's and 70's went to F1 races to watch guys crash and burn to death - no, that's not why we went to F1 races back then.

 

I disagree Fred...the media DOES celebrate the big crashes in NASCAR. what made the highlight reel on ESPN last night? lots of casual fans watch for the crashes too.

to me (and you, I gather) going to a race to watch wrecks is like going to an NFL game to watch fumbles or an MLB game to watch strike-outs. but we're in the minority...

anyway, I'm not a fan of this style of plate racing, or the g/w/c, but it is what it is. at least it's more entertaining than F1.

 

There is a difference between 'celebrating' and 'showing', however slight, but the media is going to show crashes in any 'big-time' race, be it Drag Racing, Indy, F1, ARCA or nascar.

I don't mind watching fumbles - if I can see the hit that produces them, and I LOVE watching a pitcher throwing K's - one of the few things I like about baseball.

Same for Indy racing, EXCEPT there is action in a nascar race.

I agree. IRP puts on a much better show for the stock cars than IMS.

also, how much of a clusterf*&$ will it be to switch IMS from road to oval course in the same weekend? (moving barriers, traffic/crowd control, motorhomes, etc etc).
