It is probably the air injection pump. It comes on when you start the car and then goes off after the catalytic converters are up to temperature. That is my guess.

Yup. Your guess is completely correct.

I like that sound too. It makes the car sound very exotic-car like upon start-up.

Are we talking a very high pitch whine?

I'm sure he's referring to the growl from the air intakes when the car is cold, I love that sound too!

Yeah, mine too, but the problem is it doesn't stop when the car's warmed up.....I drive alone now.

Really? I always felt that noise makes the car sound a bit "broken". I can't wait for it to stop.

I'll try it your way of thinking for a while and see if I get over it.

Yup, kind of a strange experience when that sound cuts out so suddenly. I almost wish I could figure out a way to keep it all the time. Anyway, the way I used to describe it was that it sounds like a lion's growl. A very big one ;)

Takes about 4 blocks of driving for the valve to close. Once the engine gets to a certain temp it doesn't need the extra air in the exhaust manifold to clear emissions.

It's just a stupid emissions thing with negligable benefit.

This "air pump" has stopped working on my '99 GTS which I think would account for the CE Light to stay on. A few questions then:

1: Fuse has gone out and just need to replace fuse?

2: Sensor(s) that start the pump has gone bad or bad connections?

3: Actual motor that the runs the pump went tits up if so, how difficult to replace?

4: Just had engine out service, related to the removal/installation of engine/trans-axle?

    5: What other causal factors?

6: If not fixed near term, possible damage to other components?

    Thanks guys!

    Most likely fuse needs replacement.

I have a 95 spider and have never heard this noise you all speak of. I think I need another 355 owner to listen and point it out to me. I don't suppose the 95's had a unique system that is not as noticeable when running??

    Any thoughts?

    thanks, Mike
