    my Slow Down light came on at start last night and never went out on my 1987 328 GTS. Since it came on at start it seems a pretty straight forward enough conclusion that the cat is not overheated.

    I found some old trouble shooting threads about the system and found the CCCU on a parts chart but I have no idea where the cat control box is actually located physically on the car... seems simple enough to trouble shoot to see what needs fixing but I don't know where to look for it.

    Sometimes the simplest things are the hardest.

    any help greatly appreciated.

    See Fig 64 in your 328 US OM -- it's mounted to the same plate (in the floor of your rear trunk) that holds the K-Jet with Lambda ECU.

    The fact that that box is not fixable/replaceble is the reason I removed the cat from my 328 and installed a straight pipe. Not having a working warning system for that function made me too nervous to leave the cat in place. Fortunately, my 328 qualifies as a "historic" car in MD (20 years old) and so it no longer has to pass emissions tests.

    Whose straight pipe did you use, and did you retain your O2 sensor (if so, how well does it work).

    Pipe's from Ricambi - yes, the O2 sensor and the thermocouple attach as per normal (even though the thermocouple has nothing to monitor anyway but it's more elegant than removing it or wiring it up out of the way.

    here in WA, its 25 years... I might have to wait a year if I cant get the slow down light to work... I agree that the straight pipe makes more sense than fixing the cat warning system for $700.

    Just out of curiosity... did the straight pipe have any effect on the noise levels of the exhaust?

    No - not that I could tell. Maybe if you had two cars side by side with/without a cat you might be able to hear a difference but I didn't notice any change in driving it.

    talk to Patrick at FERR PARTS,i bought a real nice LARINI test pipe,,,its got a nice stainless finish,,and i paid 189.00 for it...916 974 1939,,,the Larini is top of the line...and its got all the sensor fittings..TUBI and the test pipe sound the best,,,,my exhaust note did change for the better when i added the pipe to the Tubi...your car will also run cooler in traffic ........LAX tunnel video soon to follow.,but ill tell you,,the car sounds pretty sick echoing inside the tunnel under LAX..and i have to record it..
