I've obliviously assumed that this was another F-car quirk and that manually recentering the stalk was normal, but while looking up something else I just noticed that the manual says it should "..automatically trip back to center..." Is this a fixable common problem or must the whole switch be replaced?

Pull the steering wheel hub off and have a close look at the mechanism. I can't remember exactly off the top of my head, so this may not be entirely accurate...There is a plastic ring for the horn contact and under this is the turn signal cancellation. There is a tab on the underside of the horn ring that engages two switches on the switch body. Turning the ring one way flips one switch and turning the other way flips the other one. My guess is that if your turns don't self-cancel, the tab is broken and therefore not flipping the cancel switches.

Verell's your man -- he can fix anything on these switches.
