I've been looking at a few 365's/400 in Europe. Cars from the early 80's have all the "vin" code at the base of the windshield, but this code is missing on the earlier ones. However, I found a 73/74 365 which had this number at the base of the windshield. Could this mean that this car has spent some time in the US? I also found the tire pressure decal, in psi instead of kilos pressure, in the glovebox, which might indicate a US connection. The Ferrari plate with model/ chassi and engine number is also missing. Reason to worry?

If one item is wrong could perhaps be explained, but when it comes to this car one gets the impression there is a mix of Europe required information mixed with information required for the US. I've the Keith Bluemel book "Original Ferrari V12......guide" in which he states that these cars had a plate on top of steering column... , which is missing on "mine". Furthermore he states that the 365 GTB/4had "tyre data on inner face of glovebox lid" for 1972-73 models, exactly as "mine" I don't think European models of this vintage had this label. Would be interesting to know if owners of 365's and early 400's could verify this.

The plate on top of the steering colomn would have been the serial number. I'm not sure how that could be missing since it is stamped in there. Can you supply a picture of this area?

I suppose you could pry the whole plate out of the cast recess......

Only picture I have, don't have a 365/400/ 412 close by to compare. Is the pad with the serial # one piece with the steering shaft? can it be removed?

    Nope

The serial # plate is on top and part of the non rotating steeringcolumn cast, see the attached picture of my -77 400 Automatic, picture taken through steering wheel and fwd, you can spot the wiper stalk to the right.

Other picture shows same plate on my -77 308 from above for reference

    well look at that!
    Isn't that interesting.

Just for comparison sake here is a picture of #17167 where you can clearly see it has a plate on top of the column.

To make things even more complicated, I looked in the Owners Manual for the 365 GT4/2+2, and there is no mention of a steering "shaft" serial number pad!

    According to OM, no pad.
    Photo of 17167 shows pad.
Photo of 17215 shows no pad.

    Go figure that!
