If you think the Factory doesn't care about the dealer's making a profit and being successful, you have no concept of how to run a franchise business.

They are all connected. The success of one depends on the success of the other.

Besides, holding resale value plays helps sell new cars. If resale is high, then owners will trade up easily. This drives new car sales.

I haven't heard any news or reports from anybody other than the speculators, but I can't see Ferrari hiding the engine. It doesn't make sense to me. I would go out on a limb and say that they would use a soft top and have the engine visible, than to have a folding hardtop and have it hidden. Now I could be completely wrong and have no problem admitting it when the spider is unveiled, but as of now I will say the engine is going to be at all times to be seen.

Bck in my "just post" college days, I had an X1/9. I could remove the top and stoe it away in the bonnet in 15 seconds or retrieve it from the bonnet and put it back on the car in 20 seconds.

I, for one, will never own another convertible (or targa, or a car with a moon roof).

I, for one, don't like the wind in my 3 foot long hair, nor roll the windows down (excepting for toll booths and ATM machines).

I, for one, like the strength of the full coupé chassis structure. But I will note that the McLaren CF tub is strong enough to do a Spyder without chassis rididity issues. Not so for the 458.

Do you guys think the roof will operate like the chevy ssr but be way more sporty. If its like this then the roof can fold and the engine could still be in clear view with the top up or down. I found a youtube video to illustrate. What do you guys think? http://youtu.be/DFezZBiI68M

Wow that's an ugly roof line, but yes I think it will be similar, just 10x classier executed. :)

Btw I'm with gmast827, can't imagine Ferrari releasing a modern V8 Ferrari with that engine eyecandy hidden away... But I could be wrong.

Lol, I feel the same way DriveAfterDark, The roof needs to look 100 times better, but I hope its something like this, and I second you on the idea that it would be a crime for the ferrari not to show off that V8 engine.

You don't have to believe what I say but I can assure you it's not speculation. Go and visit other forums who have spoken to dealer staff who attended the presentation and you will see their reports are consistent with mine. Or just speak to your dealer and ask someone who attended the event.

I haven't said they will discontinue the coupe I've merely stated that the spider will materially affect spider sales.

By the way the hood opening time is 14 seconds.

Yes I could to... but you throw your shoulder out doing it! :)

The damn thing never fit well. It whistled with the windows up. I leaked water through the gaskets. You don't have much in the front trunk if you wanted to put down the roof, and it was a pain in the RUMP to do it.

After all that, all you did is make a hole in the roof not much different than a sunroof.

Targa = pain in the rump for not much payoff.

I think this post is correct (I think though you meant to write COUPE sales in your last line).

I wasn't singling you out, but what you said compared to what nads said about the glass engine cover contradict each other. Coupe sales always get effected when the spider version is released!!

You really think Ferrari would make a targa as bad as that in this day and age?

Simple answer: Maserati Mc-12. It has a targa. If it was so great, why does everyone laugh at it instead of copying it? It's a joke.

It's not the fault of anyone. Its physics. It's a big area that has to be taken off and stored somewhere. Even if its in full CF the thing is a sail.

The targa is the roof version of pop up headlights. Luckily, these gimmicks have run their evolutionary course and have died a natural death.

They way Ferrari are firing on all cylinders these days, if they did go targa I don't believe for one minute they'd do anything other than the best targa implementation yet seen. They're at the top of their game, they're not going to drop the ball.

True -- but the idea of lifting the top and storing it behind the seats is about as old as vinyl roofs (which you also saw a lot of in the 80's).

It's time has passed, like cassette tape players in the dash.

What makes you think you'd have to lift it out. I doubt that very much. It would be a one touch button jobbie.

Then I think we are talking about two different things. To me, a targa is a removeable hard top that you pull off the roof and stick in the trunk. It's not powered.

The MC-12 I think is the last in a long line of these contraptions going back to the Vette split roof panels of the late 70s'.

Targa is not about the way you remove the roof, it's about how much of the roof you remove and a targa distinguishes itself from a spider by the fact that only the centre section comes off. Whether the roof is removed by hand or motorised is not the defining factor.

Well, what I mean by obsolete is taking the roof off manually and sticking it someplace inside the car. That is way beyond obsolete.
