Hi everyone Happily, my car has been running fine since the plugs were changed. I was following the starting technique recommended by Paul and others, so I guess I was unlucky when it flooded. (Paul, if you can change all the plugs in 20 minutes you should be in the Guinness Book of Records!). Despite some lousy weather in the UK, I've been trying to put some miles on when the rain stops. Last Thursday I went to the Ace Cafe Italian Bike & Car night - the Ace is a cafe (or 'roadhouse' for our US friends) which has a long association with UK motoring, and which hosts regular nights with various themes. Most of the cars present were Fiat 500 Abarths but there were a few more interesting ones, including a 1978 Ferrari 308 GTB, the new Alfa 8C and a very clean Testarossa. However, you will be pleased to hear that the Silhouette attracted the most interest (see attached picture). People were literally taking photos of the inside of the exhaust pipes... I can't make up my mind about the level of attention the car attracts. On the one hand I am not a particularly sociable guy, and I don't generally want to talk to complete strangers just because we share one interest - I would much rather drive (particularly on an open road) than pose. On the other hand, the attention is universally positive and in fairness I have been known to have a good look at other people's cars myself. The level of ongoing fascination with these cars is also what drives forums like this one, which undoubtedly provide a lot of practical help as well. As with most things, I guess it's a question of balance - it would be rude to ignore people who are simply paying a compliment, but that doesn't mean I have to be their new best friend. What do the rest of you think? Jonathan Image Unavailable, Please Login
awesome... glad you are enjoying the P118 so much. if you think that thing is people magnet now wait till you restore it to the original Rame Colorado color! cheers HF
Something different...this is a review from Sport Auto magazine (June 1978). My French isn't great but it seems to be a very favourable review. Not many Silhouettes in blue - can anyone identify which one this is? It seems to have a light interior, and I think the number plate is Bologna (the text suggests that the test drive took place at the factory). Enjoy! johnathan thats either #40072 or #40040 if memory serves. they both should be blue/natural happy motoring HF
Only 4 Silhouettes were delivered with a blue exterior; #40040, #40060, #40070 and #40072, all 4 had a natural interior ! My first idea wass #40040 but this was not correct. It cant be #40040 or #40060 because the car in the article has US side blinkers. #40070 was eliminated because not completed at the time publication. This makes me believe that this is #40072. Last trace I have for #40072 is in the early nineties in the USA. On the ILR its reported as new color (purple ?). Who knows where #40072 is today?
BO 1068 is one of several PROVA plates used by the factory on various cars for testing on public roads. Yes this is 40072 and one of 6 cars delivered to SEA Roma with provision for US side markers but fitted with Fiat X1/9 style inserts. Image Unavailable, Please Login

It had the unreal quality of a dream...last Friday I was on the road before dawn on the way to meet Mel Nichols. As most of you will already know, Mel was editor of 'Car' magazine in the late 1970s and the author of a number of articles on the Silhouette and Lamborghinis generally, including the seminal 'Convoy' story. His articles were one of the main reasons I decided to buy a Silhouette, and I was interested to see if he would still enjoy driving it. We were blessed with clear roads and clear weather, and the experience was everything I could have hoped for. Mel was very complimentary about the car: in his own words it was "a pure delight to drive it. I wondered how it would feel after 35 years. It was marvellous. No wonder we thought they were special at the time." The car behaved faultlessly, and listening to Mel revving it to 7000+rpm made me forget that it is nearly 35 years old. In the interests of posterity I asked Martyn Goddard to take some photos (he also used to contribute to Car in the 1970s and is still very busy today photographing cars and rock stars). You can see the results here; I hope you all enjoy them: https://picasaweb.google.com/JonathanElstein/October272011?authuser=0&feat=directlink A couple of example shots attached below.
