The weight difference is minimal (there is a thread on here somewhere where somebody is doing this, and we are talking a few kg's not 100's of kg's). The real advantage would be the rust issue, but in the end you would be taking genuine cars and turning them into replicas ... a real pity. Pete
Really? I have heard around 250 lbs, I think. . . Not insignificant. Yes, I completely understand what you're saying here, and in fact that has always been one of my objections to the 288GTO "re-bodies." And there are a number of small inaccuracies on most of the re-bodies which, combined, create more of a parody of the GTO than a tribute. But with 308's, at least, you'd be starting with a 308 and ending with . . . a 308. Correct proportions and accurately shaped and sized body panels shouldn't be a problem. Maybe it's a bad idea, but I'm surprised that nobody has done it.

I never understood the whole front engine based kits to replicate a Midengined design. Sure the Veyron Replica used a Merc cougar which is also becoming more and more popular now with people using them even for F-430 kits but come on! This is a Testarossa we are talking about! Its obvious the motor will be in the front and it will have that "V8 noise" regardless. It's like those "Testavette" kits based on 80's Corvettes to make them more like a Testarossa its better to use a Fiero or even an MR2 based chassis for a more acturate look.
I've even seen "308 replicas" based on Camaros. Wrong engine layout, wrong size, wrong proportions. . . Why bother? I agree that a midengined donor car should be the preferred choice for a replica of a car that was minengined originally - but I've only seen two Fiero-based Ferrari replicas that actually looked even halfway decent.
There's a Firebird based 328 running around in Colorado. I tell you it looks nothing like a Ferrari 328. Its about as acurate as a civic with lambo doors trying to be a Lamborghini. Don't get me wrong those, the Fiero based 308 kit's look pretty nice. I've thought about picking one up and modifying it to a 288 GTO.
I'm sure it doesn't. Everybody knows it's a Trans Am, so why put "Ferrari" badges on it? Weeeelllllll. . . The Mera is said to be one of the very best 308 replicas. Still, there was a lot that bothered me about the aesthetics. Most glaring is the apparent 1:1 ratio of height to wheelbase. Lowering the roof seems imperative to the aesthetics of any Fiero. I've often wondered why there aren't more Fiero-based 288 replicas. Be sure to mount a V8 longitudinally with twin turbos when you do yours.
Having owned a 3rd gen Firebird and a Fiero in my life I can tell you it was based on a third gen chassis. The logical question would be why you would you want to install headlamps on a Camaro thats going to turn into a 328? V8's in a Fiero are extremely useless. Your better off getting a 3800, Single Turbo. Most 328 Replica's are 308 converted. Although they were offered it was extremely rare to find one.

Okay. . . But it's basically my opinion that any replica based on a Fiero is pretty much useless. I just wonder why the Mera and other 308/328 look alike bodies weren't made to resemble the 288 GTO instead. After all, if you're going to "replicate" a Ferrari anyway, why not copy one of the rarest, fastest, and most expensive?

I once worked with a guy that would, after going to the bathroom, walk over to the sink, PRETEND to turn on the water, rub his hands with PRETEND SOAP under the PRETEND water, then PRETEND to grab a paper towel, then walk out. As if NOBODY KNEW he wasn't actually washing his hands. A crappy replica is like not washing your hands! I do exclude certain kits - such as the Beck Spyders - from "crappy" replicas, but this thread is still tops!

I found some of the same numbers, but I know from parking my 308 next to a Fiero that the roof is lower on the 308 than on the Fiero - which is why the "replicas" look so out of proportion - and why there are aftermarket companies that lower the roofline of the Fieros - a significant improvement in appearance. The height of the 308 is actually 44.1". The wheelbase is 94.12". Also, the length of the Fiero is 160.3. The 308 measures 172.4. So the 308 doesn't just look longer and lower; it is longer and lower.
You are correct on the height -- my poor typing sorry - the mera / 308 were never direct copies / a replicar 308 "stinger" was the most direct copy - there are (were) good -bad and ugly in the kit car business but I respect those that take pride in what they build Cobra / Jag Speedster correct length lambo's etc and yes even the F cars
