I have had to park my 1981 400I every summer, I finial had enough and decided to do something about it and had a aluminum rad. made by 'Ron Davis Racing' $1,700 and three months later it now makes it driveable in the city, when it is over 100F, big difference.
My oil temp. is still very high and I will look into a bigger oil cooler since my car is a 5-speed and I do not use the space for the trans. cooler.
The rad. came out in a hour with the hood on no problem, I did need help lifting it out.
The new one was so much lighter I was able to set it in easily by my self.
I will sell the original freshly rodded and cleaned no leaking, radiator if any body needs it.

Wonderfully timely thread - I was just talking to Brett yesterday about the need for exactly this.
Looking forward to hearing about your experience with the cooling performance, and a contact number, if you would, please. :)

From conversations with me, and possibly a few others now that he has new reason to know, Brett is now getting a feel for just how hot it gets in the OK/non-coastal TX/NM/AZ area, since the cooling breezes we get comes from.....someplace else that's just as hot.

Beautiful looking piece of equipment! Just curious as to your oil temperatures and what oil you are using?

I use Mobil 1 15W-50 and oil temps on the hot days here in New England (say low 90's F) go to 110 C. If it's not a hot day, the oil temp stays around 100 C, which I consider to be the minimum that I would want to see.

The synthetic Mobil 1 has a working temperature that goes pretty high, much higher than anything I would ever hope to see.

    God that's a beautiful thing-

First thing I do on any older car is have the Radiators flushed and cleaned and have the fnis straightened- Both my 400i and 412 stay very, very cool even in the heat- Stuck on the Mass Pike the other morning for almost an hour and the car was mostly idling with the A/C on full blast- temp needle never budged.

My 308GT4 sees a definite rise in temps but never to the point of anythign dangerous.

Some of the 400 series cars I looked at had ridiculous amounts of crud in the radiator-

Any where in the 90's is a cool AZ. summer day and I have ok temps. same as your as long as I did not push it, as soon as it gets in the 100's which is all summer except at night, I could not drive the car with out it getting to hot.
It is hard to comprehend what hot ambient temp. is for people who do not live in this area. Another issue with AZ. is it is very dry and so the air is not as dense and will not transfer heat away like it does in higher humidity places. Easier on animals that can sweat but harder on equipment that does not.
I use 'Total Quartz' racing oil, a synthetic rated at 10W50. I have a friend's shop get it for me.
So far there is a very nice improvement in the H20 temp with this rad.
I am going to SD Cal. in a couple of weeks and the drive across the desert near Yuma will get over 114F and should be a good test. I will report on that drive.

I of course tried having the rad. rodded and cleaned and flushed the coolant system and brought it up to factory specs. which is apparently not enough for AZ.
It is funny to hear a New Englander talk about what hot is, must sound as funny as a Arizona talk about cold
"it was so cold we had frost on the windshield!" " the dog water had ice on it this morning!!!"

I've been to Phoenix in late May, when the temps start getting pretty hot and the hotel prices start dropping. I've heard stories about the airport shutting down when the ambient temps > 120 F because the jet engines had not been certified to perform at that level.

One November my wife and I came to AZ for a vacation that ran from Tucson to Phoenix to Sedona and up to the south rim of the Grand Canyon and the wardrobe that we had to pack had to accomodate temps from the 80's in Tucson down to below freezing at the Grand Canyon.

Kurt knows what hot is :)
I used 'Ron Davis Racing Products inc'. www.rondavisradiators.com
The workmanship was great and the fit was very good. I had the top tank lowered a 1/4 inch to give me a little more hood clearance when the hood is raised.
They were recommended by a variety of people including that shop that hot rodded a 365GT4, with a 412 long block, Carrelo rods, 365 heads and 40 DCOE carbs. They had heat issues in LA with the extra HP. and found this rad. was their answer.
Now that I have dropped my rad. off for an sample it is now in Ron Davis computer it possibly can be ordered over the phone.
I still need to do something about the brass thermo-fan switch in the aluminum rad. to not have electrolysis damage.

Ron Davis Racing is an excellent choice, they just make a radiator for my BBi and put on two upgraded SPAL fans. When I had a 400i I used the stock radiator but removed the oil cooler and put in two upgraded SPAL fans and never had a water or oil temp problem after that. You might want to consider upgrading the fan instead of sticking with the original.

Since oil has leaked into this thread, is there any reason to worry about the zink content of the oil?
While these are not solid lifter engines they do have lots of chain links, sprokets, ball bearings, and cam to valve parts as sources of extreme pressures.

The 1st thing I do with any newly acquired car is to recore the original radiator. I had no reason to do so but in the interest of having one less thing to worry about, I recored our 400i

Recoring is replacing the core but using the original fittings, upper and lower tank. Done this way it is original and everything fits and looks like it did the day it left the factory. The aluminum replacement radiators look just like an aftermarket replacement. My personal preference is to keep the "factory" look if at all possible.

Now we don't have the long hot summers in Seattle, that most of you folks do, but when the temps outside are in the 80's+ my temp is 90 degrees with the a/c on. I have never seen the temp above 90 even in long standing traffic. The cost to recore my radiator was under $700.00.

That is why terms like 'tall' 'rich' 'safe' have no meaning with out a standard reference point.
So to help clarify terms, so we can understand each other better,
Here are temp. #'s in Fahrenheit, with out exaggerated ratings by people who live in western states that get "hot".
80-90 is refereed to as "cool out" "nice day", get out and ride your bike, track your car have fun.
90-100 "nice out" and "getting hot", maybe limit some out side activities.
    100-110 is "hot"
anything over 110 is "very hot day"
So when Kurt and I say we need to do something to help our cars run when it is "hot" means over 100 degrees Fahrenheit ambient out side temperature or stop and go traffic when it is over 95 F.
If you do not experience those ambient temps, than modifying your cars cooling system is not necessary as pointed out many time in this thread, if the system is operating up to factory specification you will be fine.
But if you live where it gets "hot" or have "hot" rodded your car and need to remove the extra heat from developing more HP. than it might be of interest in how I am solving the problem.

    Fritz, nice new Ali rad!

I have a NOS, never been used 400i radiator that I will sell for a lot less than $1700. It is certainly clean and should improve cooling. If you have a clogged or damaged radiator, contact me via this post or via pm.
