From the 206 to the latest 246 : Differences point by point.

As there are many unreferenced differences (and some others referenced but unclear) between each type, and including in each type, thought interesting to focus on these so as everybody could restore his car in its original shape.

 

206 w/ straight eared spinners :

Spinners stamped Dino, rims stamped Fiat.

246 L-serie (1st series) :

3 curved eared spinner stamped Dino, rims stamped Fiat.

Spare wheel exactly of the same kind.

Tyres increased from 185/70/14 to Michelin XWX 205/70/14 on same width Cromodora magnesium rims.

I was told by a Member of the late Club Dino France that very early M-series could bear same rims...

246 M & E-series (2nd & 3rd and last series) :

5 bolt holes, Cromodora magnesium rims, stamped Fiat.

Same tyres only as above (not conform on this pic)

Spare wheel exactly of the same kind.

What's unknown to me is when rims stamped Dino appeared.

Maybe on the E-series only ? (the 2nd pic shows an E-series from 1973)

The rims stamped Ferrari seem to have appeared on Dino 208 & 308.

It seems like this wooden steering wheel has been mounted on all the L-series too.

It seems that it's the regular steering wheel for M-series.

Now, the Momo "Prototipo" version, fitted in a 71' M-series.

Said all original but only repainted in black.

2 holes left and right, 3 holes at 6 o'clock spoke.

Is it the wheel that appeared 1st on M-series ?

And then we could consider the 2 hole at 6 o'clock spoke as the later version ?

NB: I have no pic of this version on my Euro specs Dino pics (it does not mean that we can draw a coclusion however !)

Yes this car is not all original.

Even the dashboard has been re-made w/ non original material : black suede leather.

Correct as found in the later E series cars and early carburetted Ferrari 308's

 

That's what makes restoring these cars so `interesting'...Superformance claims the opposite, that the solid steering wheel (my pic) is for earlier Dino's and the one with holes is for later years.

 

Superformance has their images wrong. Earlier cars have holes and the later cars (E Series) have no holes. Given the age of these cars it is pretty common that they were changed to the later no hole wheels at some time but the correct wheel is the one with holes.

On the same theme if the car in the image is indeed a Euro M series car, it has the wrong steering stalk assembly too. These stalks are fragile and it is common that they were replaced with later models when they broke. The bad news is that they share the stalk with a Daytona meaning that it is BIG money to find another one.

Totally correct. I have seen both the wheels with the holes and the 'prototipo' holes version and cannot determine which was correct for which cars. The best info I have is that 'prototipo' wheels began around 1972 production.

The 3 holed "prototipo" version I posted the pic of was originally mounted on # 1760 from 04/1971

This car has a VG tracability w/ current Owner since 1978.

 

So should my Euro #01712 (03/1971) have the "prototipo" version or non-"prototipo" steering wheel?

 

"Momo" is the brand.
"prototypo" is the steering wheel modell, the type.
There were several "prototype" versions from Momo available:
- in silver or in black (both not painted, but anodized hardened)
- in different diameters (350 and 380 mm),
- flat or non flat spokes,
- three or two holes in the "middle" spoke.
Some cars as the Dino 246, the Renault Alpine or the 911 R/ 2,7 had it from factory on.
Prototypos were also available for after market sales I have a catalogue with all the cars.
The 246 GT "M" has the silver one with two holes on all spokes,
this can be seen on all brochures as 41/70 or the press photos of the GTS from 1972.
The switch to the Momos without holes was done in 1973 due to (at the holes) breaking steeering wheels.
