    Hi,

I need to rent an open trailer to take my Testarossa up to Monterey behind our 2010 Navigator. Any advice on what to look for or who to rent from? I've heard a few folks tell me to avoid U-haul but haven't really told me "why".

    Thanks,

    Rick

Both times I've needed to rent a trailer I went with Penske and I didn't have any problems.

Rick - Why an open trailer? Navigator should be able to pull an enclosed trailer and I would think the price difference would be worth the protection for the TR.

    Just curious...

    Hi Scott,

Yeah, the Navigator is rated to pull 9,000 (and we do pretty close to this with our travel trailer loaded up for camping). But, it can be a nail-biter at times on the open roads. I'd rather just put a nice car cover on it and run it up the I-5 in one shot to Monterey.

As fatbillybob is fond of saying, "when towing, you want to be able to drive with one hand on the wheel while munching on your fast-food burger with the other"...or something like that.

    Thx,
    Rick

Cool - Makes sense. In that case I saw an earlier response recommeding Penske over U-Haul and FWIW I 100% agree. In my road band days we pulled a car behind the bus for bopping around the towns we were in and I always used Penske without any issues.

Enjoy Monterey! I will make it there at some point darnit!

    Cheers :)

    Hi Rick,

Be careful putting a cover on your car while towing. I've seen them beat the bejesus out of paint. Better to just keep it uncovered. It's uncovered when you drive it!

i use an open trailer frequently with no problems. the car doesn't get any dirtier than if i drove it there. just pull it off and give it a wash.

Thanks for all of the advice and tips - especially about not covering the car.

Google "U-Haul" and the first page of results will be littered with complaint websites. Generally speaking, U-Haul has a reputation for skipping or scrimping on maintenance, and for not having the truck or trailer you reserved when they said they will (or at all sometimes).

    I'm not bitter. Really.

You may want to do some measuring? From Penske car trailer site?

    Car Carrier Load Limitations
Towed vehicle at widest point: 79 in.
Minimum width: 42 in. between inside of tires
    Maximum weight: 4,055 lbs.
    Maximum wheel base: 125 in.

    Some F-chat guy:

    TR: 177" x 78"

On the surface it looks like a tight fit?
