1937GT Cabrio 1960

I imported from Rome in 1967 a 1960 Ferrari 250GT Series II Cabrio with factory hardtop. I sold the vehicle in Los Angeles in 1970. I am trying to locate the current owner if the car still exists.

If Mr. Marcel Massini is available to assist, I would be very grateful.

Yes, later owned for many years by Dutch Ferrari importer Frits Kroymans. I heard it was sold to Tom Price, US, in 2010. $16 million for 21 cars including the GTO, AND including the now-owned-by-me 365BB #18431. It went to NYC and I brought it right back to Holland (it went through a broker so not 100% sure on the seller's identity).

Ed, we were acquainted in the late 1960's as members in the Ferrari Owner's Club of Southern California. Using the Red Book from Ferrari, I found two serial #'s that might be correct: #1697 or #1723. Both cars were a 1960 250GT Cab and both were sold first in Italy. I imported the car in Nov. 1967 to Seattle and it had license ROMA 59 49 49.

Do you know what happened to a club member named John Andrew who owned many Ferraris including a 1960 SWB competition car?

If there is a minor error in the Roma plate number you reported (or perhaps there is a recording error in the notes I have?), then your car is very likely to have been 1937/GT. The plate number has only one digit that is "off". It is a 1963 plate in any case. 1937GT had an earlier Roma plate that was the first plate issued to the car. With time, I believe I can double-check the information. I do not know where 1937 GT is today so i can't help you there.

First plate was "Roma 404803", issued 7th July 1960.
Second plate was Macerata "MC 27585", issued 31st October 1961, owner now Lodovico Scarfiotti.
Third plate was "Roma 595949" (NOT 594949 as mentioned above by vw westphalia !!), issued 19 February 1963.
Last owner in Italy was Attilio Santarelli in Rome (September 1966)

Once that detail is confirmed, then there are a couple of additional Italian owner names to share ... as Marcel almost certanly knows as well. The information I have on file for 1937GT came some years ago primarily from some research done by Corrado Bellabarba. I would have to check to see if there is any note as to what catalyzed that research.

That Rome plate was exactly as I mentioned it (595949). I have all three of the aforementioned Italian registration documents (post #16). My archive currently contains more than 5'000 of these Italian road registration documents.

I was just trying to help here and yet avoid a potential confusion. I cannot say with certainty that "Roma594949" was not a 250/GT cabriolet. It seems an unlkely coincidence but I've not researched that particular plate to know for sure. I am not questioning the history presented by you for 1937/GT. It is precisely the same as that which I have on file even if you left out a couple of Italian owner names in your brief highlight. It is not you from whom I am seeking confirmation. I am merely wishing to wait for Steve to confirm the plate number of his old car before straying too far into territory that may be describing a car that is different to the car that he used to own and about which he is seeking information in this thread.

I do not know how many plates I've researched nor how many have been done by friends who have shared their own researches. My studies are not centered solely on Ferrari and I am certain that you have collected more Ferrari-centric histories than I. I am not competing with you. My studies have sought to unify researches so that we may all learn a tiny bit about Cisitalia and/or Maserati (or even Ferrari) when research is done on a Fiat, an Alfa Romeo or hundreds of other marque names. Sometimes we learn only a bit about the nature of a certain time period ... or a person who owned more than one (not only Fiat or Ferrari) car during a lifetime. Sometimes we learn that a plate seen on a car was not actually issued to that car ... but that the owner was the same. Or that the plate was mis-reported by some other source. Or any one (or more) of a number of other confusing possibilities.

Is it possible to contact the Italian vehicle licensing dept. in Rome to see what information they have associated with plate # "ROMA 59 49 49"? Who could assist me in making this contact?

I made the mistake in the plate number. From a clear photo, the plate is "ROMA 59 59 49". Does that make the reference to the chassis no. certain as 1937GT? In my Redbook that serial number refers to 1960 Cabriolet Sp #38 sold to DeBlans, which seems right, since I bought the car directly out of Italy and imported it to Seattle in 1967, I believe.

I have all the Italian registration documents and yes, "Roma 595949" is 1937 GT.
And NO, the car was NOT sold to "DeBlans". This information is incorrect.
The first owner was Vincenzo Malagò in Rome (who was also an official Ferrari dealer). He got it on the 7th July 1960. It was Malagò's personal car for a while until he sold it on the 18th October 1961 to Lodovico Scarfiott (yes, THE Scarfiotti).

Thank you very much. Could you elaborate on Mr. Scarfiotti. I am not familiar with him. Also there was a Peter Sellers, David Niven movie made called "The Pink Panther" ( the original one) about this time. It featured the "gorilla" in custume driving a very similar 250GT silver cabriolet with red interior. The same as mine (1937GT). Any chance that was my car before I purchased it?
