I have read the book and it is well worthwhile. However, I think it would be fair to say that the allies helped him more than he helped the allies. By that, I mean that the book is really about New Zealander Pat Hoare, how his actions influenced not just Ferrari's personal and business survival, but also the post war fortunes of Ferrari and how Ferrari demonstrated his gratitude to Hoare. I don't want to "give up" here how that came about, as that would spoil the book. Manton has done a lot of research, especially with his interviews with primary sources in Modena, Maranello and in New Zealand. I learned a lot from the book. Most interesting to me was how Ferrari walked a very fine line before, during and just after the war, keeping his company going while trying to satisfy the conflicting interests of the fascist government, the (mostly) socialist workers and unions, the resistance, and eventually the occupying armies of Germany and then the allied forces. He could not be seen as overtly favoring one over another, as at that time in history he could have lost his life as well as his business and his fortune. As Yates suggested in his biography, there was a connection with Third Reich industry but it was not nearly as sinister as implied in his book. For me, the author was able to impart what it must have been like to exist in a small town in rural Italy during the turbulent times from the rise of Mussolini, through the war, and eventually post-war recovery. Manton has done a fine job of recreating the atmosphere. There are many details about Ferrari's life that are newly described (at least to me), as well as very interesting material about many of his contemporaries such as Eduardo Weber, Colombo, Count Trossi, Ugo Gobbato, etc. The book is also the story of a particular Ferrari, one of the most famed and traveled of all, as well as the story of Pat Hoare, someone who until now was relatively unknown, but who was integral to the Ferrari legend. I highly recommend the book.
I am thinning out the collection and have put some items for sale on Ferrari Ads. I can not determine a fair price for the Francorchamps book? Can anyone help? Image Unavailable, Please Login
I purchased that title when new.....$85 - $100?? Nada Editors does not list that title as available???
Used copies sold or are available here in the UK between $170 and $220. Bonhams sold a batch of books in 2006 that included this title for £299 (inc. buyer's premium). I would guess the value is between $150 and $200.
Thanks, I am taking your advice! Now I also have a first edition Fitzgerald & Merritt signed by both of the authors and is in excellent condition. I am sure it is fairly desirable? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Value is right. Just one example of one for sale in the uk: http://www.allautobooks.com/book.php?book_id=1840
The Francorchamps book sold for $150 the second day on EBay. No bites on F&M @ $350? Any ideas about "Making a Difference" by Massini?
Hello, Is this an interesting book; Ferrari catalogue raisonné Opera Omnia 1946 / 1996. It is currently on sale on a local auction site for 140 euro's. Not much info on it, only that it has 1070 pages and weighs a healthy 7kgs (never knew that books were described in kgs . best regards, David Image Unavailable, Please Login
There is a copy of Making a Difference on AbeBooks for $700+, one of 999, not the Schedoni edition. There is another in the UK for 350 pounds, a couple more may be available for a bit less if you look hard enough.
Purchase one of the later editions. My edition goes to 2000 and I paid approximately $300.00. There is a later edition which covers to 2002. Note, the earlier edition is frequently misrepresented as being the 2002 edition (check the ISBN).
V12 books in Germany has a brand new one for sale at 280 Euros, which indeed is (quite) a bit less than the offers above - see here: http://en.v12books.com/article/1899 Ciao, Lars T.
