Hi, Brancati, is this your car? It was in the US as recently as last year.

That version of Ferrari's assembly number system started around serial number 82xxx for "regular" Ferraris (all models), but started even earlier, 78xxx or 77xxx, with F40s.

Before this five-digit assembly number system, Ferrari had a three-digit assembly number system that was assigned to specific models in specific countries during specific years. Though I believe, for a time, assembly numbers didn't restart for European cars at the end of each year, and weren't specific to each European country.

Assembly numbers, then and now, went in a very different order than serial numbers. There are contiguous serial numbers whose assembly numbers are very far part, and vice versa.

Engine numbers also seem to differ in patterns throughout Ferrari history. And with such little data for comparison, it's difficult to make assumptions about how these numbers were assigned.

I believe that engine numbers spanned all models contiguously starting somewhere in the mid- to late-'80s ('86?), and a year or two later, this version (the picture you posted) of the assembly number began. That version of the assembly number, and engine numbers, both of which cover all models concurrently, are still used today.

 

My car, an early 89 348 has none nor any signs that one was ever affixed. It must have been mad on a Tuesday when the new supply of plates had not yet arrived!
Considering the customized nature of many "special-ordered" cars it's probably reasonable to assume that many cars are pulled off the line while special interior orders etc are completed.

 

I look for it every time I see your car. Clearly it's not there, but I can't help but wonder if it was removed in the past, before you bought it. When did you get it? Was any work done to it before you bought it?

 

I know what you mean.
All the plates I've seen are attached with rivets, meaning there would be two holes in the subframe. there aren't any. No evidence of subframe replacement either. I've had it for 7 years, and it was bone stock when I got it. I guess it's possible that a part of the subframe was replaced at some time, but if so, the guy who did the welding was mighty good at matching factory welds and the painter was good at matching too. I think the most likely scenario is that the guy who puts them on was off that day. The car is consecutive to BT's car, IIRC. Wonder about his?

 

I've been wondering the same thing. My assembly number is exactly 14000. I have a 1994 348 TS Spider.

Anyone else know what this represents?
