If someone with knowledge of American /English slang said that to you what would you think it ment? Whenever I visited the States and a shop assiant said that to me,i always thought and was told by my American friends it ment either "don't give a rats about your day' and or "go f...... yourself"
When I first started working in a Kebab shop (for a family friend, I was 14), the Greek owners used to tell EVERY customer "thankyou and have a nice day" on their way out. I picked this up from him and used to say the same thing to customers. From 14 to 19 I worked there part time helping out till I started my apprenticeship. And I still say it to this day. *obviously* As for RB stating it's an American slang word for "go and **** yourself", that was certainly news to me. I have never heard of that before in my life and it was never meant to come across like that in my post towards him. I am sure he is well aware that I would tell him to go **** himself if I wanted to. Kinda like the reply I got from him in Gaelic, which was not so nice.
I used to say it all the time too. I thought I was being sincere and I hope everybody I said it to thought so.
You're a nice guy, I am sure everyone thought you were being sincere when you said it. I mean, why wouldn't they think you were being sincere when you said it?
what's Bobby done now ? I've checked his posts and there is NOTHING outrageous or violating of TOU Someone is very touchy and should NOT be a mod
Wasn't Pap - in fact, Pap didn't want Ban at all. Bertie persisted elsewhere on site. In the banning mudderator's opinion; the persistence was stalkerish & demeaning. My understanding is the offending posts were subsequently deleted. Initial Ban was for 3 not-so-nice days - Pap intervened on Bertie's behalf and got it reduced to 1 nice day.
I'll vouch for "American English". "Have a nice day" simply means what it says - a nice platitude. But once in a while, a clerk will say it with a very thick sarcasm that's hardly meant as something nice. I don't think it rises to "go **** yourself" - just more of an annoyance thing at a rude customer. But it's hardly the "norm" - and is rarely heard in that context. And when it IS in a negative sense, the sarcasm is dripping and obvious - and the customer will clearly know he was probably being an ass and deserves it. Jedi
Rob has the courage to campaign against the obvious and bizarre situation where our No. 1 spammer is a protected species and he gets banned. The other mods (and Rob Lay) are missing the point - worthwhile people give up on this site because of the volume of pointless spam posts that infiltrate every thread in the Aussie section. Rob might get carried away, but the cause of the frustration is the refusal to listen by the administrators here. Although I note Pap's monthly spam count is down by almost half, so we are having some effect. Just another 50% reduction and I'll lay off too.
