Rowan Atkinson crashes his F1 in the UK. The news story is, naturally, dramatic but the good news is he is OK. I'm sure the car will be rebuilt given their market value these days.

And what must be the worst photo I've ever seen of an F1 accompanies the article (guess it was taken at night and enhanced beyond what it should have been)

    lousy picture for sure

article says he spun off road, clipped a tree and a lamp post, car caught fire but was extinguished, he was treated for a minor shoulder injury

last time was front end damage, rear ended a metro

...it'll be rebuild again i'm sure

Turns out that the photo was taken after a heavy dew and the flash caused that velvet effect.

Here is a photo of the crash (thanks speedcore).

He is a road course track enthusiasts too, so odds are he was playing around on public roads (stupid) instead of keeping that type of driving behavoir on the track where it belongs.

Will be interesting to see if it's fixed. I have no doubt that the chasis can be mended - McLaren have form in doing so - but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that there are no/virtually no engine blocks left if required and BMW can't make replacements??

they may not be able to buff it out this time around, pity but then again Mr Bean could buy 10 of them if he wanted.

Glad he is ok , and drives his cars as opposed to letting them sit.

In the end its just a machine, and he can buy another.

Perhaps he will choose something else this time, as he had that one awhile.

He has had it from new if I remember correctly, and was recently on topgear saying how he had done either 37k or 47k miles in it, I would love to see the file/files of paperwork for it with a total figure keeping it on the road for all these miles, instead of just parked up for years on end. Good on him glad he's ok and long live the car and him continuing to use it regulary.

That will buff out. No one throws out an F1. It will be rebuilt for sure.

  13. As painful as it is to see a car like this destroyed, at least he drives it and puts miles on it. It would be much worse to see it in a hermetically sealed chamber with a perfect paint finish and only 3 miles on the odometer. At least this one has had a fun life. Hopefully it gets fixed and it can have even more miles put on it.

He's luck he only had minor injuries--luck guy, it will be interesting to find out what caused the accident and if MC will be able to put the car back together--they are evaluating the car at their facilities right now....

How will we, the general public find out whether or not it has been written off?

It's a shame there is no blog of forum recording the evaluation and potential rebuild of the car.

Rowan Atkinson has owned this car from new and clearly is madly in love with it. You should read his writing on driving the McLaren F1- written in a very romantic way. This thing is for sure going to be rebuilt. I would be extremely surprised to hear differently, and the only doubt that I have is the fact that this has been smashed hard.

It would surprise me if it wasn't rebuilt for two reasons: firstly value, they are worth a lot and McLaren could probably rebuild one from scratch and it would still be worth it. Secondly Gordon Murray made sure that it could be restored while it was being designed. He realised that some things can't be remade (like all plastic moulded instrument assemblies) so made sure that everything on the F1 can be remanufactured. He was looking out 100 years :)

One was repaired in Australia's largest ever car insurance claim. Cost over $1 million Aussie dollars ... this one will be repaired, even if it needs a brand new chassis.

    It's only money ...

It won't be repaired if needs a new chassis. Some cars have already been damaged and not repaired. There was one Mclaren in Brunei's car collection that was damaged when a mechanic crunched the chassis against a some sort of post, or wall. The composite specialist at Mclaren, with tongue in cheek, said that they could start building the car around the right hand door. When all was said and done, another Mclaren was lost.

If it needs a new chassis it needs a new chassis ... why does this mean it will not be repaired?

McLaren can make a new chassis, just takes money and time.

    Pretty sure Pete is right.

I suspect when the Brunei car was damaged two things prevented repair - market value of F1s was lower, and Brunei stopped spending any money on cars (and no doubt couldn't see the point in fixing a car they had several of).

Mclaren could make a new chassis. But they would refuse, and have refused, to do it. It would amount to the company building a 65th road car, which would be a manipulation of the supply of Mclarens, and hence their value.

Brunei was interested in fixing it:

marine boy/Mclaren composite specialist: "I was asked if I could assess the damage and when I mentioned we could fix it they seemed very relieved, right up to the point I said we can rebuild but we would need to replace everything and base the rebuild around the RHS door which was the only salvageable part of the car to build from."

The other parts of 005 went back to Brunei as spares for the other cars.

If they make it as a "replacement" chassis then no new car is made and no value issues. I personally cannot see any issue. Give it a number that relates to the old chassis number with the word replacement on the end of something?

    Anyway lets wait and see.

If the only thing which had survived had been the VIN plate, it would still be worth repairing.

Likely cost $1-1.5M or so to build one from scratch; and then have it be worth $3-4M.
