Hi Marc Another one for the archive AM120US.1184 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Maserati-Khamsin-bodyshell-/120758630255?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item1c1dc6776f Graeme
Hello Graeme and Bob: Yes 1184 was discussed here maybe 10 months ago, the seller started restoring it but the car was really too far gone in terms of rust, past accident damage very badly repaired so was going to sell the parts. By now he seems to have sold off all but the shell which had received some alterations by his hand as can be seen in the Ebay link. As Maserati Blue points out Mobile.de is a good source as is anamera.com and autoscout24.com Two cars that are interesting in Europe are offered by the same Zurich dealer in Switzerland: Koni Lutziger whom I first visited in 1984 when I was 20! http://www.lutziger-classiccars.ch/angebotsuebersicht.aspx?page=3 -AM120100, the silver car with rare smooth early nose which its owner allowed me to drive in April 2010 and ran very well is a very good original car which has since had some significant work done on it. -AM120244 the red car which has been restored like no Khamsin before since I saw it in August of last year. I have really not seen so much spent on a Khamsin before though the owner is a dealer (not Lutziger) so he did not have to pay his own hours. The positives on that car are a new standard of restoration on Khamsins, the negatives are that the bumpers and hood grilles should not be red and that some of the material choices in the cockpit are off. This being said I admire the seller for doing the work which should set some people thinking though I would not encourage wild speculation on Khamsins as a substitute to Wall street or gold! If someone wants a car to drive it seems it is fully like new. For 140000CHF = 127000 Euros = 182000US$ it better be! best regards, Marc
Hi, it is a pity, that the restoration does not care about originality, such a chance and what a waste. best Rolf
Hello Rolf: You are right however I think the bumpers and hood grilles could be easily sorted and at that price the seller should do it as part of the sale. The rest is maybe not so simple. Again I applaud the seller for doing this but factory correct will always be best. MS
Hi Marc Thats a huge price and the condition is the first one i hve seen that rivals my car. Sids car here in Aus has the bumpers painted looks OK but its a nice car not top marks car. Interesting to see if it sells at that price in this mad economy that car equates to 140,000.00 CHF = 186,939.17 AUD I just had mine valued at $85K AUD! and if you wanted import a car like that to Australia it would be a final bill of 250K AUD! To quote an Aussie expression their F..g dreaming! My 2 cents Graeme
Hi Graeme: Well there are two factors: Zurich is a very very affluent city with numerous private banks so the luxury sector is very dense, hence prices are different and in fact the only other Khamsin priced at that level though not one that has received as much work is in Zurich with a well know dealer who normally sells major Bugattis, Delage, Horch etc. The second factor which you describe in no nonsense Aussie speak I will call...optimism best regards, Marc
Hello everyone, I've had my eye on a Khamsin for a while now. It's a 1978 US model, with a rear Euro-type bumper conversion but the factory front US bumper. The interior has been mostly recovered with the exception of the door panels and front seats. There is no rust at all on the car. It will need the carbs rebuilt, and Euro-style headers installed, plus maybe some exhaust work, new shocks due to age, and eventually paint, which has cracked along the back part of the roof and around the headlights, although besides that it's not too bad and patching these areas somewhat would be fine until I could arrange for complete re-spray. The car is a five speed, and black or dark blue with a black interior. There are a couple of little other issues, like it has an aftermarket stereo deck installed which I would like to replace with a period piece, but besides that and what I've mentioned above it seems like a very nice, well-maintained, and very drivable car which is what I'm looking for, as I plan on driving it at least a few days a week and am not looking for a show car. All the switches and electrical items work. I have some friends which are Italian car specialists who I would be able to take the car to for maintenance and work at much less than normal shop prices/ I know this is a very vague question and I hate to ask it, but due to the rarity of these cars it's difficult to establish a value for them, and I have very little market knowledge. If anybody could give me a rough estimate of the values of these cars in the US I would really appreciate it. Thank you.
Hi goldfinger. AM120US1174, a black 5 speed car Sold in December on EBay for $54200. It had 22000 miles and full Euro spec conversion bar sidelights, and was reputedly One of the nicest on the country. I believe it's previous owner Contributes here. Also in June last year a fantastic fully restored and converted K By Gary Bobileff made similar money at Bonhams US auction. More recently Ivan Ruiz, 'the carnut' has Brokered the sale of a red/black 2 tone car I think a good driver like the one you describe. He is very knowledgeable of all things Maserati and would I'm sure be able to cast light on the current Market. Happy hunting and best regards. Mark.
Hi Marc My comments do seem a bit hash however there two things that poped into my head. The Classic car market could boom again as the world looks for stable priced investemts. Secondly do you know what the definition of a pesermist is.................... a Pesermist is an optomist with experience. Graeme
Happy hunting Marc is pretty much on track with his values. The US is probably the best place to look. Euopean prices are much higher than the rest of the world There plenty of knowledge resourse in this thread so happy reading. Any questions about what you find, both history and technical, I am sure there are contributers to this thread who can assist. Regards Graeme
Hi Graeme, I've already found the car, it's the one I described and fairly local. I've been looking at it for a while. The owner hasn't really named a price and I'm trying to research what would be a fair price to offer. Regards.
Hi Goldfinger Please keep us posted please and youll be expected to supply pictures and a chassis number, just Kidding! but it would be great if you did. We like to keep track of the cars Happy negotiating Graeme
customer in yesterday saw the maserati cars every where and told this story. 25 years ago he removed the engine from his Khamsin and sent it to Grossman. never got it back, sold car. owner, Harry Rainier
Hello all: -Have been busy working on KHAMSIN QUARANTA planning, the PDF presentation will soon be ready. -Another one out of the woodwork. I had known of this one for some time but did not have its details. It appears to be the only one in Finland. It is AM120331, right hand drive 5 speed first registered August 1st 1976, the owner Mr K.M. bought it in 1989 in London and has not registered it in Finland, it is dormant, he has too many cars and just appreciates its design. Hopefully sleeping beauty will be resurrected in the near future. -In other news AM120192, discussed here long ago, originally delivered new to Japan, long for sale in the Chicago area is now in Germany for sale. It was originally metallic blue with white Connolly interior. http://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/showDetails.html?id=150079338&__lp=1&scopeId=C&sortOption.sortBy=price.consumerGrossEuro&makeModelVariant1.makeId=16600&makeModelVariant1.modelDescription=KHAMSIN&negativeFeatures=EXPORT&lang=de&pageNumber=1 Getting rid of the red carpets would be a good start towards more harmonious colors. So yet another crosses the Atlantic to the old world, even if this one was not originally delivered there the trend continues. This unfortunately is the -belated, sorry!- answer to the poster just above: when one becomes available in the US, particulalry a 5 speed they almost invariably get vacuumed east across the pond so keep a vigilant eye on the market and get ready to act quickly when one becomes available. best regards, Marc Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I believe this car - 409 - has already been discussed here, but as a quick update it has changed hands & we are about to begin a bare metal body restoration. (& yes....we are expecting it to be pretty grim!) If there is any interest I'll post pics at critical stages. Cheers, Al & Sarah. Hello again Al and Sarah and welcome! It is very gratifying to see 409 being saved, bravo to A for doing it! Some of you may recall that this car was featured in Italian cars, a UK magazine in I think 2000. Yes please keep us informed of progress, while not so many post here many view the thread and appreciate the input. This also encourages the rstoration of other Khamsins, such as AM120US1230 which has now arrived in Berlin. Here is an auction catalog page that shows it in green but that was not its original color, which apprently was bronze...and so this leads me to believe that it could possibly be the mystery car shown in the 4th photo which I have never been able to identify and which I thought was either 381, Paul's car or 341, Doug's car. Paul has stated that it is not and Doug does not believe it is his either I think (it was originally luci del bosco, then gold for years and now ldb again since earlier this year) so it could be 409. Hello Maserati blue, you are right those fog lights are not original. best regards, Marc Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Just a quick note to mention that Fabio Collina of the factory's Classiche department has asked me to inform Khamsin owners and enthusiasts that the Khamsin Classic kit is now avaiable online in the Maserati store: http://www.maseratistore.com/en/online-limited-edition/maserati-classiche-khamsin.html No I am not involved and did not get a free one but will definitely buy one! There are of course other kits for other Classic Maseratis as well. best regards, Marc
I already bought mine and did a review on the maserati forum. I was told they are going to make more of those for other models as well.
Al, please post pictures. I much enjoyed seeing your work on the black Q'porte thread. I'm glad someone braver than myself is rescuing 409, I passed on it as it was such a state. Looking forward to seeing your fabrication of the rusty bits! Best regards. Mark
What's interesting here is that after a quick look the Khamsin version looks to be a decent buy. As do some others. That's a an actual owners manual just like the original? The Ghibli II version is overpriced IMHO. Most of those CD versions of catalogs as well as maintenance manuals and owners manuals are available free. Where's the Bora version ... Please?
Hi Marc, MANY thanks for your help.....very much appreciated. The colour in the 4th pic certainly matches what we've found with the glass removed & behind the doortrim panels. (I'll try to get a good pic of the original colour tomorrow). Though the l/h door appears to have been replaced with a second hand one at some point (can't remembr the colour immeditely, but it wasn't the same as we've found elswhere). Thanks for the comments, particularly re the black QP III. Best wishes all, Al & Sarah.
Al, I second the above, I too almost bought this car, but passed when McGraths gave me an assessment of the state of the body (sils were particularly bad). I saw pictures of it later where there were very large holes in the drivers side windscreen pillar. Would be interested in your experience as at some stage in the future I would like my Khamsin taken back to bare metal and re-finished. Look forward to the pictures. Bal
