Summer is in full swing and the sport car versions are out in full swing.

I have noticed that Pcar drivers wave or flash as I pass in the Boxster S. Doesn't matter how old or how new. Doesn't matter what model except Cayennes never wave or flash.

    BTW I never wave first.

I also notice that Pcar owners do not wave or flash at my red 360 F1 Spider.

Is this universal or just here?

I often have owners of older Porsches wave at me (especially 80's 911s for some reason), but never get a wave from someone driving something water cooled.

read into that what you will ;)

I'm a waver! My wife was bummed last night. She drove my 911 and passed another and got snubbed with her wave!

I sometimes wave when the driver makes eye contact (sometimes, i feel they avoid it..) and usually get a wave back (911/Caymans/Boxster/914)/

i wave and flash at all aircooled cars....including the 356. i do not initiate a wave or flash on the h2o pumpers but if they wave or flash first...i respond in kind.

    Aspen thing?

BTW, I wave at them all although most of the water pumpers have no idea what the car is.

I'll usually acknowledge eye contact with a wave and get one back, at least with older Porsches - no love from the boxsters in my area, somehow - I often get waves from newer "911" variants, too.

Most water coolers aren't going to wave back anyway even if you did wave first...

I don't wave first bcus it would ruin the experiment since too many people would just wave back regardless.

I have never seen your car here. Did you wave?

when i drive the 88 cab or 79 turbo, the back and forth waves are typcially for the air cooled p cars and somtimes the 996/7 GT3 and turbos,as 99.9% are real enthusiats. I know some 996/7 and boxster owners that are not enthiasts and and could care less on the wave thing. on guy in a very nice 996 i waved at one day thoought i was giving him the finger.

when i drive the tr6, the back and forth wave is for any old british roadster.

This was very much an early 911 thing - 1960s, 1970s. I knew people in PCA who insisted that this was what the headlight flasher (pull back on the turn signal lever) was for.

There was even a silly "order of waving first" article that I read in one of the magazines - the higher in rank your Porsche was, the more you had the right to wave first. The 911S was the king. It was suggested that the discreet way to do it was to raise your fingers above the steering wheel, not to raise your whole arm and wave all around.

Porsche even had one of their fairly rare print ads in Road & Track dedicated to this subject; they claimed it showed the intense brand loyalty of the customers.

As I recall, it started to die out in the mid to late 70s, and was pretty much gone by the start of the wide-tire cars.

Looks like it may be starting to have a comeback, but I would have to say that I seldom see it done nowadays with so many Porsches on the road - and I drive a 993 Targa almost every day in Dallas.

I clearly remember my father flashing his lights at other Porsches in the '50's. Other sports cars would only rate the couple of fingers off the steering wheel acknowledgement.

My wife and I can only fantasize about living in Aspen. We would if we had the resources. We spend a week there almost every summer. I did see you in the 360 once. I gave you the thumbs-up from a Frazier-Nash LMC. There was not a response. Must have been part of the experiment.

When I'm in one of my P-cars I tend to wave or flash the lights (depending on which car I'm in)...rarely get a wave back though.

I really think the new owners don't remember the days of the P-car owners flashing their lights at each other as they passed in opposite directions. Then again I'm early 30's and know...go figure.

    Zxgarage, it's waving, not waiving.

I still flash my lights to other Porsches when I drive my 911. It's telling as to who remembers "back in the day"....

The tradition is still very much alive and well with bikers. (waving, that is)...although it's changed somewhat. Used to...you'd just wave. Now...they "hang an arm" toward the pavement.
