Now that Austin is on the official FIA calendar, will the race really happen?

  1. Yes, it will happen.

  2. No, no way for construction to finish.

I was about to suggest the same thing! [May even be better to fly somewhere "close" that's not in Texas?]

Going back to an earlier post, my buddy on Lake Travis (who's spare room I've already reserved! :p) says he's about 3 miles as the crow flies, 8 via water, from the Red McCombs place referenced earlier :)

We're thinking Fri & Sat we'll drive & on Sun take the boat and thence a chopper - Anyone have any idea what that flight might cost?

    Cheers,
    Ian

have you gotten to try out the new back-in angle parking along congress? I hear its the bee;s knees ;)

No word yet; meaning she hasn't cut Bernie the check. My guess is they're going to wait till November to write it....:D

I haven't been making it over as often since Lady Valeria reconciled.....but my Amanda moves up next week to UT so I'm thinking I'll be around more in the Capitol City!

Look for her black/black Sky convertible on Ohio paper tags..

So, is November 18 official? If no, when?

The rooms I had already booked for a June date were not that bad, had no early cancellation penality and no minimum days.

I'm planning on attending this race, race or shine, summer or not! I don't care about booking a room in advance since I'm planning on staying at Lackland AFB or Fort Hood, probably the former since AF tend to have better amenities than the Army AND San Antonio is bigger and better than Killeen, I'm assuming.

They're both about 1 1/2 hours away from Austin, but I don't mind the drive, specially since I'll be saving a lot by staying in base lodging, probably less than $30/night. :)

I do have friends that live in Texas, although I'm not sure how far away from Austin. Either way, I have the military to fall back on! ;) Good luck to all of you, hope you can get rooms at decent prices soon.

If it's November, most likely I can make it. When does it become "official" and you can buy tickets? Anyone know? Their website still has June as provisional.

Not much help, but something: http://impactnews.com/northwest-austin/256-recent-news/14190-formula-1-race-date-inches-closer-to-november-2012

    Other articles just reference "Fall."

Interestingly, the majority of the linked article discusses the effect of the date change on the METF funds.

I pretty much agree with Combs that the date change likely doesn't really effect the economic analysis (and may improve economic impact based on weather,... but the proposed date does brush up against Thanksgiving and Holiday spending,... so who knows.)

Pretty much certain someone will object (litigate) to stop releasing METF on procedural grounds,...

That's not a bad idea, I'll have to keep that in mind. My only issue is I wanted to be able to bring my dogs along. My thinking is the wife will enjoy herself more with the dogs there. Also, I'm trying to think of ways to keep costs low. Jen just started her own law firm so cost is key unless she takes off faster than I'm thinking she will. We will see how she does in the next few months and then decide what we're going to do.

Either way, I'll be there, I don't want to miss the first race of (hopefully) many.

Decent plan if you only want to go on race day. Less good plan if you want to see friday practice & saturday qualifying. That last trip back to San Antonio on sunday after the race is what you want to avoid. We drove straight back to Texas after one of the indy races. Big mistake, we were all totally pooped already at the end of the race.

True, I think I'm only attending the race. Saturday I would want to explore the city. :)

we're planning on rolling in tues or wed and leaving mon. set up the fleetwood, dial in the sat tv, fire up the grill and walk to the seats. easy peasy. no traffic jams, no bad meals at overpriced restaurants, no being gouged triple for and a bed and hopefully a great first race.

Having been to seven F1's Wed and Monday work best for sure travel wise. Especially if CoTA / F1 has something extra going on at the track on Race Thursday like Indy did in the later years. From my experience exploring the entire facility, watching from different areas of the track and taking it all in ... Thursday thru Saturday was the best! Actually Sunday raceday was always anti-climatic and over crowded. I love F1 but thankfully it's is a multi day event and the races are only 90 minutes long. To me it is not about just Race Day it's all about the whole package. There is always the evenings to explore the city or other venues.

I just started checking out homeaway and vrbo for rooms. That might be a better way to go if I can't get a hotel room.

If we do end up going, it will be a short trip, likely Saturday AM to Sunday night. Any idea what time of day the race might be?

Probably between noon and 2pm. Look for the later as it will satisfy Bernie and the Europeans by being closer to prime time. Got to keep them happy!

we used to go to indy every year. tues and wed things are still fairly quite. that said i'd still rather be sitting on that two lane black top with 5000 than 50,000. it would be great if we could get a fchat camp area to set up at.
