What is the best voice over IP system for a company of about 30 people?

We have offices in 2 cities.. we need to be able to transfer to extensions back and forth. Voicemail. Let extensions roll to cell phones. Conference call system / lines.

Also, anything that syncs everything with Google Accounts?

We use 3CX as our VOIP platform with communications through a combination of Vonage and CallCentric. Multi-location, no problems. We have about 12 extensions now, but usually only see 3-4 simultaneous calls. Runs on a Server2008 box with 4GB memory.

Look at shoretel or outsource to ringcentral.com

Interesting, does one need a CCNP to make changes/updates post-installation?

No not at all. It comes with a very easy to use user interface. I would however recommend a smartnet (support/sw update/hw replacement) contract on them however. The Cisco TAC (tech support) is great - granted i'm saying this as a cisco partner so take whatever I say as slightly biased towards them.

    This is perfect. Thanks.

We want to use this in conjunction with Google Apps Pro for email.

Google Voice should buy ringcentral.com and combine it with their Google Talk. Then everything would REALLY be simple as I could dump Skype too.

I had a traditional phone system.
I used to forward my extension to Google Voice when out of the office and had recorded the exact same voicemail message on my google voice account so no one knew.

I now have one ringcentral.com line I am testing out; and so far it is fantastic. I am going to replace ALL my traditional POTS lines with ringcentral before the end of the year. It is so good that I am paying a few thousand bucks to break my Telco Contracts - it is that worth it.

For a virtual office it is perfect. I can move to anywhere anytime and never be locked in to one number or one exchange or what physical address. I can work from my office, or Europe, or the Caribbean, or or! And all my contractors, that have offices everywhere, can still get an extension number and can be reached by their extension through my RingCentral IVR.

Very slick and I agree GoogleVoice should buy them. :D

The problem I've seen with solutions like RingCentral and Shoretel is they do not offer BLF/Presence functionality to determine when other extensions are in use.* For us, it was critical to have a solution where each hard-phone (and softphone) has a bank of indicators for the other office extensions. Those indicators are green when the extension is free. They go red when its engaged. (BLF/Presence)

    * Maybe things have changed since I last investigated them.... but it was a 'must have' item in our evaluation.
