I'll be going in for surgery on Sept 7th for the whole deal. I don't really snore, but I also don't really breathe out of both nostrils either. I cannot wait to be able to breathe out of both nostrils and to not have my morning sneezing fits (doesn't matter where I am, always happens).

My concerns are about the recovery period. September is planned as a training month. I'll be doing the Tough Mudder on October 9th, and the following weekend, the Livestrong Challenge 5K run and 90 mile bike ride. I'm concerned about recovery time. Is a week all I need? Or what's the worst case scenario... two weeks out of training?

Also, hopefully not to be taken as spam - if you want to do the Tough Mudder in Central Texas, I have a team setup. FB link here: http://goo.gl/3jG7u Or if you want to contribute for the Livestrong Challenge, you can donate here: http://austin2011.livestrong.org/rwhitten

    Randy,
You're young and healthy so will heal quickly, but I don't know how long it takes. And a week may be pushing it,especially running.
But good luck and best wishes,

    Wow, that is very weird.

I'm having the same issue of a deviated nasal septum, and was just thinking about this.

Let me know how it goes.

Interesting timing as just 2 days ago I mentioned to my doctor that I don't breath well thru my left nostril. Has been this way for as long as I can remember but I don't snore or have sneezing fits so I never really thought about it.

However, months ago I sneezed really hard and felt something move (weird feeling) from my left nostril to right. For a short time my right nostril was the clogged one and the left was free flowing.

Finally remembered to mention it to the doc and he did a quick look and put me on a nasal spray. I'm thinking given that I felt something move my issue is something that a spray won't cure, but I'm no doc. If no improvement after ~ month he will refer me to an ENT doc.

Like you I will be interested to see how my exercise efforts improve. I'm no where close to being a Tough Mudder but what running and such I do do I find proper breathing, i.e. in thru the nose...out the mouth, to be hard.

Best wishes on a quick recovery and keep us updated.

I just went to an ENT. One friend had it done after 6-9 months of trying different meds before being elected for surgery. For me, a bit different - I went in there told him the scoop, got a CT scan in house and that was it. Decision was made not to fight it with nasal sprays but to do the surgery.

One main annoyance I had and why I went there in the first place was because of nose bleeds. For the last three years I've had more and more of them - only one nostril and they happen at odd times. Two weeks ago in a pool with friends and gf says "uh your nose is bleeding". I don't even notice when it happens, and other times, I will sneeze (I'm always clearing my nose for some reason - ugh allergies - and then a clog loosens up and I start bleeding all over. Quite annoying.

This procedure is supposed to be a simple one. Doc says it is a 20 minute procedure. I'm booked for 45 minutes in the OR. Fix deviated septum and clear out other passageways which should reduce amount of inflammation in sinus area.

I recommend the TM event, but plan on it months ahead of time to get yourself in shape. I sign up for these kinds of events to motivate me to train. Personally, it gives me a goal. Otherwise, I'm working out to stay fit and to stay active, but not for a purpose. A buddy of mine who did the Warrior Dash with me last year has been training and raining. He's lost a lot of his gut, 25 lbs worth. That's two bowling balls. He's dropping pounds slowly by eating right and running a few times a week when he can.

I have trouble with the into nose out of mouth technique too. Always have. Maybe this will improve my breathing technique. Right now I just breathe however I can. In... everywhere, out everywhere.

had it done a while back..cant say I would do it again, as I hated the three or four days with the packing in my nose. I got a little claustrophobic at night when I could not breath at all from my nose..so I just slept in a recliner all night. Recovery is quick, so you should be ok. Good luck!

At least twice I have broken my nose, and this has lead to two surgeries, probably separated by ten years.

The only thing I wanted to say, and it may not apply, is that you should be confident that if this is going to alter the shape of the exterior of your nose, that you go to a good/great plastic surgeon.

My second and last surgery, my doctor was just concerned with improving my breathing. Cosmetically I don't think his effort turned out well. At the time, I just was concerned about my breathing, and I think I should have been concerned about the cosmetic outcome as well.

About a year ago I had my septum fixed. I had 97% blockage on the left side and was getting sinus infections pretty regularly as a result. Also I had a pretty good lump because of 4 broken noses as a kid. I would absolutely recommend it. After getting the packing out 4 days after the surgery I was like a new man. Now when I blow my nose I get a good flow can really clear things out. Still get a cold from time to time but haven't had an infection since.

You'll probably want to train on a bike for a week but running after that shouldn't be too bad. I had a plastics specialist who was formerly an ENT guy so bruising was minimal. He was really good.

    Good luck and breathe easy.

I never had a deviated septum but I had a nose job where they had to break the bones. It was knocked out for at least a week. Deviated septum surgery might be a lot less hard on you but I was surprised by how just a nose operation wiped me out.

Interesting, I didn't consider the exterior ramifications. I assumed the doc would zap or whatever a couple folds inside the nose and be done with it. However, does make sense that that would effect the structure of the nose. Ugh.

 Pics or it didn't happen. :D

I had mine corrected in 1996. Apparently the doctor "missed" a blockage further up, and in order for them to correct it, they would have to completely redo the surgery. I said pass.

    Recovery took 3-4 days.

Frankly, I think my doctor was an absolute idiot.

I had a similar experience with my DS surgery. Took about 4-5 days to feel totally recovered and I did not take any pain meds other than Advil.

I agree. The following few days were some of the most miseable of my life. It was not painful, just uncomfortable. Imagine having the worst cold ever, with snot constantly draining from your head (from the mucinex) and not only can you not blow your nose, but you have 2ft of cotton shoved up your nose for 4 days. Uggh I was miserable.

I didn't sleep in a recliner, but I slept with 2 huge pillows under my head.

Would I do it again? I don't think so. My day to day symptoms are a little better than before the surgery, and my colds are less severe, but I still snore and still do not have what I would consider "good" breathing ability thru my nose.

I'm kind of surprised by some replies. Maybe it was the quality of my surgeon but I had a full rhinoplasty done with 3 new breaks in addition to the septum with minimal bruising and no pain meds. I even took down, moved and put back up a 24 ft above ground pool for a friend 3 days after the surgery. I will say God help you if you sneeze within 2 weeks though.

Had the surgery. The recovery sucked because of the face pain and nose packing. Spent all of my time on the couch. I was starting to feel better, then I got sick. OWW!! Bad timing! I was good to go after two weeks. Had I not been sick, I'd say 1 week is a good recovery time to plan on. Breathing is WAY BETTER! Even when I get sick now, I can still breathe through my nose. It's very rare that my nose ever gets completely stuffed.

Thanks Steve. Went to the store to stock up on food. Finishing off my BBQ before midnight. Got lots of gum/mints since I will be a mouth breather for a week. Will arrive at surgery center at 11am cst, out after recovery by 3ish. Hopefully, no more fire scares like today's!

At home now. Sore throat from incubation tube. Otherwise a bit drowsy, not too much. Not that bad. No splints in nose. Nothing crammed up nose either. Just gauss to catch draining blood every so often. Can sorta breathe through nose which is a good thing. Worried about being a mouth breather for a few days so I stocked up on gums and mints.

Time to sit back and watch some more of The Wire.
