The F1 crowd at Indy never really reached the epic proportions of the 500 Weekend, of course....IMO.

    Still, fun!

Yup, I'll be there. Only a 1/4 mile stretch. I don't expect to see much, but to hear... oh yes. There are some frequencies that the television cannot emulate.

Exactly. Cant think of a better way to spend a Saturday than hearing the gates of hell unleashed in downtown Austin and then maybe driving down to see what we can of the track. I think WJHMH is also planning on being there. Since you're our local guy, can you help us decide where and when to meet up?

If they don't confiscate your camera, PICS OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN........yet.

Hopefully, they run it at full bore. The sounds are very nice regardless of how fast they run it. It is better to hear a pack of 5 coming out of a corner though. Soon enough my friend.

You think Bernie sent DC to pick up the check? ;)

On a related note... on Speed Report last sunday Varsha made some comment that he had asked COTA's developers whether a delay in Texas releasing funds would delay construction... (COTA claimed not as,... "financing is in place").

I've asked before in this thread, and been told before that the $25M goes directly to FOM/Bernie... but this keeps coming up. I would hope Varsha would know this little detail... if that is the case.

Does anyone know for sure if the $25M goes directly to Bernie,... or into COTA's account.

I've been watching the Red Bull event story unfolding and hadn't been able to find an event link on the Red Bull events site. I called the Austin permit office for events, and guess what? There isn't a Red Bull event!

I was told that they applied for an event permit, but they didn't apply in time (45 day minimum before event requirement.) They did apply for a filming permit, but I was told there would be no event, its for a commercial, that it would be in a controlled environment without spectators. Even worse, as I write this, the permit is still pending, meaning it hasn't even been approved!

The capital outright denied a permit to film, and now this from the city...way to support the cause...sheeesh.

Thanks for the update. They'll need to make some kind of exception to the rule for this to happen. Perhaps this is where Perry can shine...?

F1 is big news in Austin.

They need promotion elsewhere to raise 'awareness'. Lets hope the brains behind all this with Tavo have a plan. They sure arent talking about it. Promotion is expensive. Lets hope the budget is in place.
Bernie cited this as a problem with Indy.

"Cancel that trip to Austin this weekend; no public Red Bull runningPosted by SJ Skid on Aug 18, 2011 in Prime & Option | 3 comments

Red Bull Racing will not — I repeat will not — be doing a public running of its “show car” this weekend, as originally announced.

Red Bull released the following statement: “Due to feasibility, a formal Formula One show car demonstration that is open to the public will not be executed this week“However, in an effort to bring fans up-close and personal to Formula One, the Red Bull Racing show car will be on display in front of the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum this Saturday from noon to 2 p.m.”

According to the Austin American-Statesman, the museum is located downtown at the corner of Congress Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, if you want to just see the car.

But, let’s be honest, that’s not the same as watching David Coulthard drive it.

There is no much explanation — heck, there’s no explanation — about the change. Red Bull maintains it is enthusiastic about the return of the U.S. Grand Prix, and I don’t doubt the team that. It does seem like a missed opportunity, though.

IMHO, just another example of the track organizers missing a golden opportunity for promoting the track because they did not go through the proper channels with local government. I found out they did not apply for the public "exhibition" permit within the required 45 days. I believe they had a "tenative" filming permit where it would only be held closed to the public.

It seems they need to focus a whole lot more with working with the local government initially instead of continually "ramming it down their throats". But all just hearsay, and what it looks from the outside looking in.

Regardless shame on the local government for not bending over to help promote the city. A golden opportunity for Austin shot in the foot over damn politics.

THAT would be awesome. Heck even if they just left it in neutral & fired it off in front of the museum it would be awesome

    WTF!!!

Those folks kept me ALIVE while I built the Marriott, plus they had a Memorial to the girl hit and dragged two blocks to death by the truck down on 6th St.

    Now who will remember her???

That would be amazing! And the fines would likely be small. However,... Impounding the car... priceless.

I mean come on, what else is even MOVING in that neighborhood, on the weekend?

I could get halfway to the river before they even heard me!

Do a little fakey do turn around the Confederate Memorial on the Capitol grounds, and then head on down South Congress for breakfast at Guerro's.

    ;) ;) ;)

It's $200 to get your car back from Impound... you do have to prove Title and Insurance though......my card says "Ferrari" but you get 30 days grace coverage on a new car you just 'bought".

"I just bought this, what do you think?"
