Looking for advice. Anyone own or have owned a 2002-2005 996GT2. There is a nice one here:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsche-911-996-Twin-Turbo-GT2-Coupe-European-Model-/170680600908?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item27bd5b494c

My Father passed away a couple of years ago, and I was left with a 1987 911 Turbo. Nice car, only 24k miles, but I just don't drive it, maybe twice a month to keep everything lubricated. Been thinking about replacing it with the GT2, or a 2010 GT3, but the prices are still pretty high on the GT3's.

Other option is to just wait until after the first of the year, and put the 1987 Turbo towards a 2008 Scuderia?

    Porsche owners please chime in.

IMO I will keep the 930!
I think that the 930 is one of the most beautiful Porsche ever made! Also it only has 24K miles and that makes that car worth more.
More important is that it came from your father.

I've had a 2002 996TT but not a GT2. Nice car but more rattles and creaks than I would expect from a coupe. Mine had some minor issues that were fixed under warranty such as bad key fobs a few times, clutch slave cylinder went out (common on these cars) and other minor things. The one on ebay is a Euro model, I don't know what difference that may make as far as service, emissions, registration etc.

I am a Porsche guy, but not a GT2 owner, nor will I be. But this is personal preference, its a great drivers car.

The GT2 as you likely know is a 2 wheel drive TT with a bit more of everything except weight. A good portion of the weight savings is in losing the front wheel drive system.

The GT2 is raw and a bit of a handful to drive, as compared to a 996/997 TT. The all wheel drive system makes the TT very drivable IMO.

If you want a challenge to drive and maybe do some DEs, the GT2 will likely be more rewarding to learn and conquer.

You might want to watch Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear try and get one around the track.

The episode is: Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 Porsche 911 GT2. I dont remember the series or show.

Go with the Scud, Porsches are awesome but a dime a dozen - at least where I live.

Looks fast and clean. If its what you want go for it. I had two Porsches and they are fantastic cars. All mine required were gas and oil and one battery in 8 years of ownership. I have seen the GT2s on track and they are beasts. This is one of those cars that for the most part can't be driven to its limits by its owners.

Lol, well you are sorta all over the place here with a 930tt vs 996 GT2 vs Scuderia!

The 930tt is truely a very, very beautiful car. Perhaps my favorite looking 911.

I have a 2002 996tt and am extremely happy with it. I second Trent's comments on the tt vs GT2, and would like to add that a tt can be had for about 40% less $ than that GT2 and a simple $1k flash will boost the tt's hp to ~485. (That GT2 is beautiful though, and great carbon fiber interior updates). Add an exhaust (I have a catless Europipe Stage 2 Loud) and you are easily over 510-515+. I really like the awd at these hp levels, and use the car in the rain and snow if I want. The GT2 is a great car, but you have to want the twitchy RWD in this setup at this power level (keep in mind it doesn't have the complicated Ediff like you will get with the Scud).

If you really have the alternative to just wait a few months and get a Scuderia instead, and the extra $100k+ cost and likely much higher potential for depreciation and maintenance/repairs isn't a bother to you, that is certainly what I would do! I plan to keep my 996tt forever, it makes a fantastic snow beast for Ohio winters, but I certainly don't think you can compare the exciting/wow factor that a Scud has even to a tuned 996tt/gt2.

ETA: 997tt wheels look good on the 996tt/gt2 as well :).

Just looking for something a little faster than the 911 Turbo, or 930 how ever you want to say it. No point in having a nice car that sits 360 days out of the year, and not very good for it, I would rather have someone else own and drive it, instead of it sitting pretty in my garage. I love the sound of the new GT3's, not a fan of the RS wing. Those are still hovering around the $120 asking for something around 3k miles, and there is so much customization like Ferrari's, that it's tough to find the right one. Most don't have carbon interior and very few have the carbon sport seats. Guess you could always add the carbon interior pieces, as it would be tougher to add the carbon seats and probably more expensive to go that way. Guess I should go drive one and see what I think.

Check out six speed forums. You can build yourself a 600-700hp 996 tt/gt2 monster cheaper than you might think. $10k will get you 600 whp, $19k will get you 700whp. http://switzerperformanceinnovation.com/products_porsche_996tt_p93.html

So if speed is what you are looking for, it is hard to beat Porsche, and the 996tt models are about as bulletproof as exotic cars come. Again, it depends on what you are looking for.

Guess the problem is I don't really know what I am looking for. Can only go so fast, for the buck a 2010 ZR1 is a steal at around 90-95k. Add some Caravaggio seats for $7k and you have a really nice car, but still a Vette. Looked at the 575m yellow on EBAY and it's a nice car, but would rather have a 2007 599 and add the HGTE wheels.

Have a Ferrari 360 Spider, Lotus Esprit, and CLK63, next would be Porsche or Lambo Gallardo. GT2 is rare and fits my price / depreciation value at less than 1/2 retail with low miles. Guess I could try it and then if I don't like it get something else.

The 993 Twin Turbo's are nice too, but they don't depreciate much, much closer looking to my old 930.

I completely agree. although I never owned a gt2, i've owned porsches and they're fast, reliable, and having ridden a gt2 before, it's one of those beasts that will be fun learning how to tame... if you can.

I can tell you first hand being the owner of a 2003 GT2 that you won't need to flash it for additional hp, it's plenty fast enough!

It comes with more speed and more torque than most mortals can handle.

The important factors to consider are the reliability, the rarity and the engineering that the GT2 is bred with.

I would consider taking the 930 on trade as my car is for sale, if interested please PM me or visit my website for more details on my GT2 (autosport911.com)

Best wishes which ever way you decide to go.

    Regards,
    Mike

The first year Euro GT2's had steel brakes.
The one other difference if memory serves is with a fuel evaporation canister in the US cars.
Come to think of it the gas tanks are smaller because of that.

996GT2 is a different feeling than a TT.

The last of the hairy chested Porsches.
Just over 1000 made and most of the European ones wrecked at some point.

There was a silver GT2 near Minneapolis a year or two ago that had these miles or thereabouts.
If this is that car STAY AWAY !
That car was twisted pretty badly.

the 930 sounds like a special car. do you have any idea of what the car is worth?

i will make a bet with you....the 930 and the 996 gt-2 prices will cross before too long.
the 930 w/ 20k miles will be of more value than the gt-2 w/ 20k miles.

wont be too long. mark my words. if you want to sell it and it is really that good a car...sell it to richard sloane. he will give you a FMV for a wholesaler and will then go on to sell it for north of $50k...mark my words on that too.

last comment...it actually sounds like you just want a newer car because if you wanted to go fast, you could make a reasonable investment in the 930 and out gun nearly anything on the road. i have a 500 plus hp 930 that i have kept fully stock appearing and just had the motor massaged in increments. it is a monster a la a 427 cobra!!!

i have owned my 930 for 9 years now and it will be with me for many years to come. it is my 3rd and last 930. good 930's should remain part of any car guys collection and should never be sold. it took me three cars to finally understand that!!

in any event, good luck to you. you will have fun either way!!

Appreciate all the nice advice. Vote seems to be to keep the 930 regardless. Best adult thing would be to build a different house with more garage space, lol. GT2 seller is highly regarded in the Porsche community. I found some nice seats that have carbon backs and the crest in the headrests. Could probably make a deal to swap out the seats and get a good PPI at the Auto Gallery, or could add 997 carbon seats, but those don't recline. In no rush, could buy it, then later trade it towards a 2010-11 GT3. Wouldn't lose much IMO.

How was the reliability? Stage 3 is how much hp? I had promised myself to only do exhaust changes after I over modified my 1994 RX7 and blew an engine. Haven't read too much about blown engines on the Turbo Porsche's, at least the one's under 700 hp?

    I am a GT2 dreamer.

I have been for a while.

I recently made 'fair' offers on two different GT2 cars. When I buy, I want to find value. I came to the conclusion, it was best to wait, until the snow begins to stick on the ground. I just 'blew' some money, on a big Cowboy pick-up truck. With that, I guess, I will continue to dream about a 996 GT2 for another year or two ? :D. A genuine 1400 mile euro car, was recently listed at Boardwalk in Dallas.

I offered 63K. I thought the offer was too much. I liked the idea of a garage queen. 63K, was a lot of money for a euro. With a euro, you have to get in cheap and get out cheap. The car, is a consignment car from a local collector. The owner is asking almost the same money, for a low-mile U.S. car.

    _____

    996 GT2 ?

Last of the real Turbos. Low production #'s and excellent performance. Good future upside. Today, it is fully depreciated. I read, at least 20% of the cars have been wrecked. I also asked, about the 2003 6900 mile, uber-rare green and tan car, that was or is listed for sale, with the dealer in Colorado. The salesman claimed, it hit an animal.

    ______

    Pete,

The 930 has only one problem. It has large production #'s.
