Guys, I am going to buy myself a Rolex as a gift for earning my MBA in December. With that being said I currently own three watches a Breitling Colt Automatic on a stainless band, a BVLGARI Scuba Diagono in 18k/SS on a two-tone band, and an N.O.A. 1675 with a black rubber band and black dial. I am having trouble deciding which model to go with, here is what I am seriously considering: 1. Rolex Tridor - I just love the rarity of this day-date and the look, but at 36mm I think it is just too small for a watch today. 38mm is the smallest watch I own and I couldn't imagine going smaller. 2. Solid Gold Yachtmaster - I love the fact that these watches are available in a white dial which the gold subs aren't and I like the gold bezel as well compared to the sub. (I'd be buying used) 3. Platinum/Stainless Yachtmaster - This watch is awesome, and I love the price, but I think it is too similar to my Breitling given the polished links and bezel appearance. 4. A two-tone Daytona - I like the fact that this watch is cheaper than a SS model on the used market, plus two-tone gives you a lot of different dial styles compared to the SS (white/black).. I'm not sure I want to own two, two tone watches. What would you buy? I'm open to any other suggestions it just has to be a Rolex, and please don't suggest any model Sub (I like the watch, but I see way too many of them each day) Feel free to post pics as well Erik
Honestly I wouldn't buy a Rolex. You have such nice watches right now, and ones that are no so common, I would look at other watches. If you have to buy a Rolex, the only one I would consider buying is the Submariner. The presidential I have now, given to me by my father keeps horrible time and I service it every year. Just my .02
A sub is a nice addition to your collection. Nevertheless, every wanker (including me) has a Rolex. Go for something different such as IWC, Ulysse Nardin, Zenith, etc.
A "GMT Master II" is an interesting Rolex with the black & red bezel. I'm a recreational pilot so GMT watches provide a useful feature for me. I have the older "GMT Master" in SS with a plain black bezel. Here is a pic of the newer model: Image Unavailable, Please Login
I like that watch especially the Pepsi blue/red models! I've given a lot of thought to the GMT especially a two tone rootbeer model with a nipple dial... Too many choices! I actually like the older case better then the new maxi case, but over the last couple years it is growing on me each year. The new blue sub though just doesn't compare to the hue of the older ones. Erik
I have not seen a Tridor in probably 23 years. Do they still make them? I like the DayDate, pick your favorite metal. Of course, I love vintage subs (especially, the red sub) -dsd
The Tridor is not made in the day-date with the president band anymore (that is the one I want to buy and the one that Arnold Palmer was the spokesman for in 90's), they do still make a tridor masterpiece with a pearlmaster band.
As you seem to be aware, Rolex have been re-vamping their range over the last 4 or 5 years. This means new models have vastly improved clasps/buckles, better quality links in the bracelet, an improved polishing process, minor updates to the movement that increase resistance to magnetic fields, maxi dials and cases, and ceramic bezels rather than aluminium on the GMT and Submariner. If you like larger watches the the DeepSea SeaDweller would be perfect for you, an ingenious construction, very well made, sturdy, durable and different enough from the Subs that you see many people wearing. Personally I wear a Milgauss which I find pretty understated (and at 40mm is a better size than the smaller DateJust). If you can afford a gold watch then I really suggest trying on the DayDate II, it's a hefty watch and there is a great choice of dials so you can really customise the look of the watch. FYI, the YachtMaster (excluding the YachtMaster II), the Daytona, the Explorer and the pre 2010 steel Submariners do not benefit from the Rolex upgrades.
Hey WRX, really no need to service a Rolex every year. No matter what it has been through it doesn't really even need it every 5 years. They are strong watches. If it's not keeping time (ie - more than +/- 2 seconds a day) then get Rolex HQ to fix it once and for all and then stop servicing it!!!! Clearly the current service it is getting is worthless!
Milgauss vs Daytona. And the all new Explorer 2 Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
This is really what I am struggling with and I'm sure others have as well. I like owning different watches and don't really see myself ever buying multiple types of the same watch. That is one reason I have always had a problem with Rolex, I just can't make up my mind. I got a couple months left to decide as graduation isn't until December, but this decision is not easy. I am probably over thinking it... Thanks for posting pics of the Explorer II the new 42mm is awesome, I just don't want an only stainless watch this time around. I am leaning towards the two tone daytona right now only because I don't have a chronograph in my collection and I already have two dive watches. Erik
The Daytona would be a very nice choice. As durable as your dive watches, has a great column wheel movement. Also a good choice of dials - make sure you look through the full list of available dials as most are NOT shown on the Rolex website. Also keep your eye out for the latest Daytona - it is on the Rolex website. It comes on a leather strap, the case is gold and the bezel is ceramic! Well worth considering.
Personally, I've been lusting after a white gold Daytona for a while. I'm hoping that when I get through (and win) a couple of litigations I'm in the middle of, I may celebrate. CW
I think you need to sack your watchmaker and demand a refund. A service every 3 to 5 years is normal; if you get it serviced every year something is very wrong. A basic Rolex service is $700. If you are spending that every year put it in the safe and get something else.
My Rolex Presidential keeps perfect time and has for the 4 years I have owned it. If I were you, I would take it to a certified Rolex watch repair shop.
What is a Rolex Presidential and why do people keep saying that? A Date-Date is some times referred to a the President but President really only refers to the bracelet.
Very, very nice! I like some of the Chopards too. The MM competitor watch I got in the Mille Miglia this year is beautiful. And I also saw some TAG Heuers I liked recently. I like classic watches, no frills. Onno
