I am considering a purchase of a gran sport covertible and need to find out some expierences with current owners mainly maintenance and general cost. The market on these cars has dropped majorly and was wondering why. Also interested in the F1 clutch perfromance is it pain in the ass on repairs and or replacements. Dealer is trying to sell me one but tells a different story and I am looking for a true account of what to expect.

    Thanks in advance

The GS Spyder is a nice car and its what the 4200 should have been in the first place. It has a little more power, faster gear changes, a little better fuel consumption, lowered springs, big 19" wheels, improved MSP, lots of carbon stuff and different exhaust system with valves. Maybe a few other things that I'm forgetting...

Overall, the GS is fine as far as you know how deal with the Cambiocorsa (F1) transmission. Basically, if you drive it hard and always in Sport mode, then you should get 20k-30k in a single clutch. If you use AUTO and Normal mode (non-Sport) then you'll get 5k-10k with the same clutch. Also, don't reverse up hill or your clutch will last a few weeks only.

The clutch can be changed by most mechanics, but after the change it requires a Maserati specific diagnostic tool to set it up. In other words, you need to go to a special shop that has one of these tools (dealer or independent Maserati shop). You can't do it yourself.

Avoid cars with Alcantara or Techno-cloth interiors, they can't be cleaned easily and eventually deteriorate badly, unlike leather. Alcantara becomes all knotty and needs regular brushing. You probably have better things to do, so go for an all-leather interior.

Get a PPI before you buy the car, get them to write the % left of the clutch.

Thanks that was very helpful especially considering I was looking at one that has that cloth seat inserts that I thought was pretty cheap and the first time I ever saw it.

I agree with Maserati Blue, avoid that brite-tex on many GranSports. There are plenty of all-leather ones around. I have a 2006 GS Coupe

Thats correct, the GS only comes with the Cambiocorsa gearbox.

The 3200 and 4200 series cars came with both Manual and CC gearboxes.

Overall, the 4200 and the GS cars are very reliable and you shouldn't have any major issues. I've seen a 4200 Spyder with 120k miles and a QP with 250k miles, trouble free. Just make sure you get a PPI before you buy a car.
