Miura, the original supercar

4806 appears to have the lowest chassis number for an SV??? (apart from prototype 4758) and all near surrounding chassis numbers appear to be for Miura S apart from RHD SV which started at 4812. Was just thinking (probably incorrectly) with this in mind that 4806 may have been a Miura S when it was first made as production number 619???

Hmmm. On further checking the production numbers numerically below 619 and they appear to be for SV so my thinking is incorrect.

Look at those round tail pipes of the early Miura, P400.

 

Well I know Jeff Stephan is a great engine builder, and Gary Bobileff is a great lambo restorer -- no problem there. But there was a beautiful green Miura at Concorso yesterday (2 down from my 400GT) that was a fresh rebuild (by Jeff/Gary)...and tho they tried all day, nobody could get it running. Even Claudio tried -- nothing.

Frankly, you'd think somebody would start the car before bringing it to Concorso. (it sat there all night next to my car, so there was plenty of time.) Or, at least they would have some idea of what was wrong with it. But nothing -- it was DOA.

I had a long talk with a vintage racing mechanic friend of mine today about this. We really don't have any idea what happened, of course, but frankly -- it was stunning to see everybody working for like 8 hours on this car. And... nothing.

Guys! Try the car out first before bringing it to the show!

Aaron Robinson had his new (used, of course) Espada there. It had huge carb problems, so his buddy brought another set of carbs and they got it running. Now THAT'S getting it done! Woowoo!

I once knew a Miura owner, a Civil Engineer by profession, who could fix absolutely anything. Qualified and very highly skilled and respected mechanics and fitters who worked all their lives as such would ask him to fix problems they couldn't and they were always amazed at the speed in which he did so. What is most surprising is that he received no formal training whatsoever and never had or needed a tradesman of any kind, whether that be a plumber, builder, decorator, roofer, electrician etc come to his house as he did it all himself. He had the 'knack' and it was truly wonderful to see this gifted man solving problems that experts couldn't.

 

True, but Claudio is really, really good.

 

Of that I have no doubt as must be true of Gary and Jeff too. Their excellent reputations are well deserved I'm sure much like Kevin O'Rourke in the UK of Moto Technique.

 

I thought Jeff was out of the engine rebuild business?

It's 4840. It has the chassis number in the Classic Driver link.

We were talking of the SV badges being in the wrong place on the ex Rod Stewart RHD SV recently. Look at the badges on another UK RHD SV 4812, the ex Ron Stern car UK reg JLL 838K. Perhaps the correct rear lights were unavailable when the car was rebuilt also?

Which SV is this? Must be a very early one with the prototype like headlight surrounds.

What has happened to the rear end? Are the rear wheels bigger, hence lifting the rear of the car? Is the rear clam lengthened or just at the wrong angle because the ride height may have been increased if larger wheels?

 

It just looks wrong. The wheels don't look any bigger but if you look at the clam from the side the line in the middle of the clam points straight towards the back and doesn't curve in an arc and move downwards the further you go back like it should. If you look at the rear haunches from the front they seem much higher. Just my opinion.

 

Yes, agreed, but I can't work out why it looks different if the wheels and ride height are correct.

 

It looks like it's had 2 jacks placed underneath the bodywork behind the rear wheels and then the bodywork has been jacked and bent upwards with the clam locked in place. The rear end view and bodywork where the pipes, plate, lights and edge of bootlid are a few inches higher than normal. It reminds me of the Ferrari Breadvan from some angles. It does look quite menacing. Still a great Miura that I would be very proud to own myself.

RHD Miura SV JLL 838K 4812 and RHD Miura P400 Reg LAM399.

 

Actually are the headlight surrounds broken off in the pic below and not like on the prototype SV 4758 (Moto Technique Pic and may explain its presence there?) and are these one and the same car? In the pic below the bonnett is black underneath and no wing mirrors though I don't suppose there were many SVs made in this colour.

Thanks, Joe. Quite a bit of info on 4878 in this very informative Miura thread. It seems to have been rebuilt a few times in a short space of time. Who did the last rebuild?

In my humble opinion ;

the true recipient of Miura's styling heritage .... (Only the styling )
was De Tomaso Pantera

if the Miura had evolved into a pop-up hidden headlights car (early 70's trend)
it would look just like a Pantera did...

I mean .. Miura's "eyebrows" or grilles and the door's horns are still there in Tom Tjaarda's design ...

Am I the only who sees those similarities ....
or think De Tomaso's car was inspired by then freshly missing car

That interior looks orange to me. Must be my eyes. This one also has the SV badges in the wrong place as does/did 4878. Hmmm, it does make me wonder how much care and attention some restorers take when they can't put the badges in the right place. Only a minor detail but it would really annoy me if it were my car.
