So when I bought my 2004 360 spider a year ago, I didn't think much of the car having only one black fob and one key, and no red fob. Since then I realized what a hassle it is to replace these fobs. Keys are easy; Fiat template works, and get it cheap. As for the fob issue, I first wasted $250 buying a black fob on E-Bay, "guaranteed to program in five minutes"; sent my PIN to the seller, and he sent the fob supposedly programmed only to find out that it didn't work. When asked the guy how he was going to program without my car being there, he told me he spent $10,000 buying a key remote programmer that works for all sorts of cars, including a Ferrari. Of course, when I told him it didn't work, he refused to take the fob back, hence my $250 down the drain. Felt stupid getting sucked into this scam, but the seller supposedly owned a 360, and sounded genuine at the time...anyway, decided to go through a proper channel this time, and had a dealer order a full set of fobs & a key for me. Took me almost 3 months for the Ferrari of North America to verify that it was my car, and finally got the set & got them programmed today! Costed me $1000, but at least now I have full set.

So the moral of the story I think is to get a full set and a four digit PIN when you buy a 360 or be prepared to deal with this hassle. After reading about horror stories of getting stuck after the only fob breaking, I felt uneasy having only one fob in my possession.

I am just glad I got a full set now after a year and $1250. Just thought I share my story in case others are having a similar issue.

So you are saying $500 for the fobs, and $500 for the code?

    For future reference..

Bosch RK112 Key fob from ebay: $40
Sending it to Gobble for cloning: $20 shipping and $50 he wants for cloning = $70

Total to have an spare FOB: $110

I think you were lucky to get the fob for $40, but I agree that a used fob and cloning is the economically sensible way to go. I acquired two used fobs -- one of them was $75, the other one was $100.

Do you mean the alarm ECU or the siren itself? I expect several people have switched out one or both. Why do you ask ... just idle curiosity?

I agree, some have been on EBAY for a while at $239 each, and there are two on EBAY now for $180.

I was quoted from a dealer $620 with FCA discount and $460 from an independent parts house last week.

Is that $50 per remote, or will he clone 3 new fobs for that price? People really need to be more careful with their spares, I have all of my spare keys and remotes for my cars in a wall safe.

Yes, seem like easier way to solve issue. Plus I haven't seen it mentioned

The red fob is the Master as I understand it (similar set up on my Ducati) and it's supposed to be stored, the two blacks are for daily use, three in all?

    Or just one of each?

Good you got it all sorted out anyway.

I might be 'somewhat nervous" with the whole cloning thing...that's the security to your whole car, with a outside vendor?

I had to spend 2500.00 to have my alarm ECU replaced by my local fcar dealer. They told me that during the process to install the new alarm ecu they had to swap the motronic units from the left and right engine banks to associate the new alarm ecu with the car and motronics. They also noted that if this alarm ecu fails that I will need to replace the ecu as well as both motronics

That sucks ! The alarm is a part of the ecu so u can do without it or replace it with aftermarket ...

Someone please chime in and say it ain't true

True, but a lot of times it's the PRIOR owner who either lost the spare FOBs or keys, or kept them as souvenirs. This drives me nuts, as it seems a lot of cars out there for sale don't have all three FOBs and both keys.

Like most modern cars, the importance of the FOBs cannot be understated. The car at a minimum is inconvenient to use w/o it. Impossible if you don't have the PIN, which in our cars is even more important to have.

If you don't have the PIN and you lose or kill your FOBs, you can't start the car w/o getting new (expensive) alarm ECUs. If you have the PIN, however, you can reduce your FOB loss risk by cloning your remaining FOB (you risk losing the FOB in the mails or having the cloner accidentally destroy it, but since you have the PIN, you can still start the car, or match a new set of FOBs to the car), or buying a new matched set.

Ferrari charges a hefty fee for supplying you with a missing PIN, and when they supply it, you had better hope there wasn't an unreported FOB or ECU swap in-between or it will be useless If you get the PIN (or already have it) and it works, you are in business.

The OP getting a new set of FOBs AND A NEW KEY is the first I've heard anyone getting a new key out of Ferrari. I was told by many sources they are NLA. Of course you can get a spare plain metal key cut from a Fiat blank, but it's not the same as having the OEM spare key with the Cavallino on it.

Anyway, I can completely understand the OP wanting to do it "right" and have a complete set of all three FOBs and both keys, albeit an expensive fix. On my car, the seller did not have the PIN and only had one key and remote. Since I didn't like the idea of possibly being stranded somewhere unable to start the car (e.g. because the FOB battery died and I was miles from anywhere, or because I might drop or step on it accidentally), I paid to get the PIN from Ferrari. Then it was a matter of either having my one FOB cloned or buying a new set of three. I opted for the latter. I don't know when I will sell my car, but I can assure you I will not put the next owner through the same hassle!

You can use the latest Viper alarm on the 360. A guy had his US spec 99 360 adapted to the Viper alarm. It can be done.

Gobble charged me 50 bucks to do one FOB, not sure if any different for multiple.. he has an old euro one of mine.

I did consider cloning the fob that I purchased through eBay, and it definitely made more sense economically, but I just couldn't swallow taking a chance of shipping out my only working fob out to be cloned. I realize many people have done it successfully, and the ones who clone have excellent reputation; it was just me.

I was also told that I could get a set for about $500-750 elsewhere (non-dealer source). I just got so fed up after getting scammed by the guy I just wanted to settle it.

I got one red fob (master fob that's required to program black fobs? To be stored safely), two black fobs to be used daily, a new pin code which I did not have to use because red fob took my original pin code, and one extra original 360 key + labor charge for programming (which I understand takes five minutes?) for $1,000 after a dealer discount; typical Ferrari overprice policy...

Oh, and the red fob can only program two black fobs, so now I have two black fobs that cannot be programmed.

Biggest question I have is What did original 360 owners do with red fobs? So many people I know who bought 360 used got only black fobs!

I agree; I am putting my spares, pin code, and red fob in my safe, and if I ever sell my 360, it will go with it; can't let the other guy go through this hassle. I took a picture of my new set; that will be my souvenir!

To clear this up a bit, the red FOB is used to send a PIN code to the alarm ECU in the car. The red one does not program the other two black FOBs. The red and 2 black FOBs come as a matched set. After you enter the original PIN code via key strokes, you enter additional key strokes to set the alarm ECU to program mode (Taz's instructions tell all), then press the red FOB, which enters the new PIN code into the alarm ECU, followed by pressing each of the black FOBs, which syncs them with the car. The red FOB differs from the black ones only in that it can transmit the new PIN code to the car.

So, you should now find that your old PIN code no longer works. If you want to start the car w/o using a FOB, you need to use the new PIN code. Don't forget or lose it! Try it out by making sure your car is in immobilizer mode, then try your old and new PINs. I'm sure you will find this to be true.

As to what became of the red FOBs, most likely owners knew they were special in some way and hid them away in a safe place (not somewhere logical like a safe) then forgot what they did with them! As you point out, too many cars with missing red ones to be just coincidental. They probably tucked away the extra black one along with red one, so that's why most cars seem to only have one black one. My guess anyway.

This is an old post but still relevant. I just bought a 2001 360 Spider and got one red fob and two black. I thought I needed the red one each time to unlock and security system and start the car. So what I am reading here says no the black fob will unlock the ECU to start the car. I thought it just unlocked the doors.

Correction, I got one key, one red key fob and one black fob. I know they work because I have used them to start and lock/unlock my Ferrari

Contact Mark at ferrarifobs.com and he can set you up with a full set or with F430 style key and fob combined. I have a set of his fobs with lithium batteries instead of the 6-12 month alkalines.

Lots has been learned about how the alarm system works since this 2011 thread and how to find your PIN. In your case, Mark can pull the PIN from your red fob.
