There is actually a factory 914 with an eight cylinder engine. I saw it at the Porsche factory museum. I think a total of 3 were built. Pretty cool

which V8? 928 engine, race motor, purpose built, etc.

the small-block Chevy V8 conversion is not that uncommon btw...

The 2 factory 914/8 cars had 908 engines in them. The orange one had the full race MFI engine, and the grey one had carbs and was de-tuned for street duty.

There are many a SBC V8 conversions out there...but there are 3 with 928 motors in them, two in Europe (with altered wheelbases or firewalls) and one in Minn.

The 914-6's are starting to be sought after, so hopefully the Craiglist car didn't ruin a good one.

Actually even the un-rusted 914-4's are cool cars these days.

914-6s have always had a big following.

JRV used to track one, and the timing and scoring sheets were pretty amazing.

He sliced thru the field like a knife...

He sold it before we met, but had lots of photos on the wall.

I last saw the 914-8 at the Porsche Museum last year. Very cool, indeed. Out of over a dozen Porsche models I've been fortunate to own, the 914s are the most fun to drive. A real 6-GT is the next race car I'd like to own/drive.

To my understanding... Both V8 914's had twin headlights via the factory as shown.

Are there any pix in public on the 928-engined cars?
    TIA

    Neither car had a V8.

    They both had Flat 8's.

(I saw a 911 on a BMW dealer lot last week - . Stopped to look... salesface assures me it has a V6... clueless.)

Yep, the orange one is a prototype based car (note the prototype shaped turn signals as well as the 4 headlights). They had to abandon the 4 headlights due to center-of-the-headlight height requirements. It's a shame, as the 4 headlights really look cool.

Let me dig up some pictures of Rick's 914/928, he's the one state-side (note that he used the 928 Pasha fabric for seat inserts...also has it on the dash face!):

Oh, here's a video of one of the German 914/928...notice the firewall being pushed back into the trunk ~1:20 mark. And the side intakes.

Sounds like a Jeff Foxworthy joke. If you've ever tried to shoehorn a Chevy V8 into a Porsche..you might be a redneck.

Saw a beautiful 914 at the Charlotte auto fair last weekend and a like new 944 and an '84 Carrera. All were factory looking.

Honestly, if I had the spare coin to drop, I'd go look at that CL 914 good and close. From the pics it looks clean, not butchered, and would certainly be a hoot to drive. Seeing as how I've had passing thoughts of a V8 Miata, I'd have to believe the 914 would have better F/R balance.

Something about a big honkin' V8 in a small car as an ultimate sleeper seems appealing!

Learned this on my last trip to Porscheland. If you owned the company, wouldn't you build cool stuff, too?
