I am somewhat at a loss due to the overwhelming harsh statements against specific drivers in regard to F1. I am just wondering if most of us here could objectively look at an incident and try to put ourselves into the driver’s position before judging. I guess what I am saying is I have a great respect for all the drivers who have made it into what I consider the best racing series in the world. It is an amazing accomplishment to have just reached that level not to mention becoming a WDC. So with that in mind, it got me thinking that when someone posts “I hate Alonso or I hate Hamilton” do they really even know enough about that driver to form an opinion. I know if I meet a person for 30 seconds who might have just had an accident they are probably going to be in a bit of a bad mood but does that mean I should assume they are an a__hole or say I hate them. So when a racing incident happens and 30 seconds of a driver’s actions or comments are aired someone posts that the guy is an A__hole or I hate that D__K, it makes me want to ask, do you guys hang out often enough to really know if he is or is not an a__hole?. I am sure a few people here may have in fact met some of the current or past drivers but I doubt most have ever even come close to one. So the question do you really hate a specific driver and why?

My answer to my own question is I think we could get a little better about cutting some slack. I love the F1 section of F-chat. It is the first place I go when I miss a race live and want to find out what happened. Most people have great insight and comments. I just don’t see the need for things to get so personal. I love Ferrari and suffer from Red mist as much as anyone in the world. I also realize, I better not say I hate any driver because knowing Ferrari that driver might be in Red next year. I also am hoping anyone in a Red car wins over any other car on the grid but I also think Hamilton, Webber and every other driver on that track deserve a lot of respect because they have proven to people a lot smarter than me that they deserve the chance to compete at the greatest level of motorsports racing. Group Hug lol :D

I cannot get my head round anyone hating a driver, strongly dislike maybe, it never ceases to amaze me the level some can get themselves worked up about it to the point of hating them, like laughing when they crash ect.

Most drivers spout off and are probably really worked up when things go wrong, it goes with the high pressure F1 territory, so personally I do not judge them on out bursts.

I would imagine all the drivers are pretty cool company out of race mode, some more than others, thats just human nature.

They get paid top dollars for doing something most of us can only dream about, but they have worked they way up, so its good luck to all of them IMO.

I also don't mind drivers telling it as it is, like Webbers "not bad for #2 driver" sort of stuff.

All good in my book, no room for hate from me.

I think that there are some here that think they need to protect certain drivers from fair criticism. The point of the forum is to discuss, and while I have no such strong feelings about any (although I love Alonso and Massa by contract as a tifosi!), the problem with a forum is that we are all entitled to have an opinion on the incidents that happen, and sometimes certain drivers tend to attract criticism more than others.

I would simply ask people to respect others opinions, mine may be different to yours (meaning another forum member) but it makes my opinion no less valid, nor yours. We should be grown up enough to accept others interpretation of what goes on.

To read some posters vitriol, you would come to the opinion they think/or purport they are actual F1 drivers or personnel themselves, whereas we all have various levels of experience both of Ferrari road cars, racing cars or even racing in general, and these experiences can cloud some judgement to the positive or negative.

    Agreed.

Can't get my head around how many people here seem to hate/dislike Hamilton. I'm willing to bet that if he was a Ferrari driver they would suddenly be praising his aggression a la Mansell.

There are a few racing drivers I'm not a fan of, including Paul Tracy and Danica Patrick, but very few in F1.

    +1 haha.

But really. I love them all for one reason or other. They are all good sports.

Hamilton for his Senna-like banzai madness at times yet amazing skill.

    Vettel for his surgical precision

Barichello for his cool-headedness and steadfast love for the sport.

Liuzzi for being a great driver who is just glad to be in F1 regardless of him driving the worst car on the grid.

I could seriously say something about all of them. I respect the heck out of what each and every one of them for what they do for the sport

+1 all of these guys are damn good. Even pedaling an HRT round within 107% is way beyond the capabilities of us armchair QB's..... One could even make an argument that it's *harder* to drive a POS quickly.

Personally, I tend to like/dislike (hate is way too strong) teams rather than individual drivers. It's well known I'm no Mclaren fan, but if LH or Jenson moved to red, they'd get my whole hearted support for example.

    Cheers,
    Ian

You think this is bad, you should go to some of the college sports boards (at least here in the states). Yikes!!

Death threats are not uncommon (not to make light of any negativity on here).

This is what I don't get. Some people act as if they and their mothers are being personally insulted when their favorite driver is attacked. I just don't get it. I like Massa; many (really) don't like him. I do not take it as a personal affront when someone bashes him. I don't like it, but it doesn't anger me. What's the point of getting all worked up over something that has ZERO effect of your life?

As for hating any driver, I don't hate any of them. I don't particularly like everyone, but it seems incredibly childish and illogical to hate any of them.

Not hate, more like Steve said, a strong dislike.

Hamilton and Alonso. Both for their attitude. Although I must say that Alonso, since he's been keeping very much to himself in the last year orso, is a much more likeable character.

It's also the reason why I prefer other drivers more (combined with driving skill).

Kimi Raikonen was a fantastic driver and I find his attitude funny...I think 98% of the people on here just don't get 'it', what makes him funny, and actually mistake it for a slacker like attitude.

Kubica, no reason anyone can dislike him, the guy just LOVES racing and is VERY good at it. Hope he can come back soon.

Schumacher of course (although I can also perfectly understand why someone dislikes him...I was too young when his most controversial stuff happened and at the time I only really watched the races, not reading about it etc).

Webber for telling 'the man' how it is.

Montoya. **** you man! and he goes into attack whoever is closest to him mode :D.

I dislike them all. They whine, they complain, they stamp their feet, they cheat, they lie, they date women way too hot for them and they make way too much money.

I just dislike the drivers I like less than the rest.

I hugely dislike MS for a variety of reasons and I can't stand Massa for his personality, but I don't hate either. An emotion that strong is reserved for only one untalented SOB:

    Piquet Jr.

I'm glad F1 will not hire him anymore.

As for the drivers I like: Normally those who are not afraid to speak their minds: Alan Jones, Lauda, Prost, Mansell, Villeneuve Jr., Irvine, Kimi, Alonso.

The highest respect I reserve for those with true intellect: Lauda and Prost

And my heart bleeds for those who probably would have been racing's greatest if it hadn't been for tragic circumstances: Siffert, Belloff, Senna

BTW: I doubt anybody on here truly hates a F1 driver. We use the term "haters" but it gives the wrong connotation. Just because you don't like a guy or you want your team/driver to win and therefore the competition to loose doesn't make you a hater.

I always think the ultimate lithmus test is the question how would you react if you accidentally bumped into the driver you "hate"? Would you walk up to him and tell him what you think, bump him in the nose or would you be happy to have found a representative of your favorite sport and use the brief encounter for a few thoughts and insights?

I once "met" Schumacher in traffic and was first stunned and then "honored" that I "met" him. I bragged about it to everybody who cared or didn't. :)

As for Massa: Well, I have an autographed card from him, which I proudly exhibit in my collection. So that might tell you something how "deep" the dislike goes...
