They are oftenfirst timers or relative newcomers. They preface the question with, This might seem really stupid, but...' or 'Please forgive me if this has been covered before...'
This reflects badly on us. They seem afraid. What are we, truculent egomaniacal beasts? Oh God, I might have hit on something there.

No, I don't think so at all. It's a bit of respect. I did the same thing when I first posted. When you're new in the crowd, you want to get off on the right foot. You don't want to make a fool of yourself so you apologize in advance to take off that possibility. Once you get used to the group, then you feel more comfortable in what you're going to get.

I think it's the opposite of looking bad at us. Actually, I find it rare that a newby gets crushed with his first few posts -- even if the question is a dumb one.

Nah.

That's not it.

Perhaps, and this is most likely, they went over to bannedlife.com (F-life, right?) and ran into the miscreants who are former fchatters and got waffle stomped for asking the same question.

Then, they travel here, assume they'll get the same treatment, and start off with an apology in order to avoid a second stomping.

Of course we know better and treat all new members here like the gold that they are, politely answer the question and bid them a good day. :D

Mac life is worse. Some guy got banned for questioning when he was going to finally receive his car! Oh! The horror! :)

Yeah, I'm telling you, they're terrified. And the argument about getting off on the wrong foot is wrong. If they were on the right foot, they wouldn't even post!

I see this approach quite often when the question is technical in nature. Inane BS, however, is blurted out all too regularly. lol

I welcome you to the sparsely populated *usage-of-"truculent" on a post* club, of which I am an egomaniacal member.

I'm really sorry, I didn't do a search to see if I was about to humiliate myself by repeating a question which I know is unpardonable. I hate myself now.

I don't think that most of us are "truculent, egomaniacal beasts."

But I have seen numerous threads started in which the poster asks a technical question and within three or four replies someone jumps down his throat because the issue has been discussed on f-chat before. Often the first reply is along the lines of "learn to use the Search feature!"

Apologizing in advance by saying "Please forgive me if this has been covered before" is not objectionable to me. It's just polite.

Wax, that photo has crossed certain f-chat boundaries. I believe we may regard the thread as moribund (another club I can join, probably).
