I had just gotten my Daytona and had to go to the California. DMV for an inspection to register the car. As I got to the front of the line this guy comes over with his clipboard and is looking thru my windshield at the steering column to ID the serial number. He looked perplexed so I said yes that is the serial number it's only five numbers, whereupon he went inside to get his supervisor who came out and verified that was the serial number. I then said to him i guess you don't see to many of these, he said no I do but just wanted to make sure that was the serial number. So I started the car and drove several feet when I heard him shouted to stop the car, he runs over and says is this a diesel, I looked at him and said no it's not a diesel, at that point I,am thinking sure you see these cars all the time A DIESEL
    Come on pal.

I had a similar experience the first time I registered my 308 in Colorado. (And if these guys "see lots of Daytonas" -Suuuuurrrre - I would think they see 308s every day.)

The guy with the clipboard walks up to my window as I'm waiting in line and asks, "How many liters it this?"

    I say, "Three."

    He says, "It's a four-cylinder, then?"

    "Nope, it's an eight."

"You're mistaken. If it's three liters, it can't be more than a four."

I showed him the owners' manual, and pointed out the model designation. Three. Oh. Eight. :D

When NJ had state run inspection stations, they failed my Fiat one year, because duct tape covered the "DOT approved safety glazing" stamp --- on the *plastic* rear window. (The duct tape was holding in the rear window on the soft top. After that, I'd just take it to inspection with the hardtop installed.)

Fortunately, they'd implemented shop re-inspection by the time I bought the Alfa.
Every year, the Atlantic City state station failed the Alfa for "uneven tire wear" -- on the new XASs (with the asymmetrical treads).
The dealer would just hand me the re-inspection sticker.

The state also used to fail it for "high beams too low". For the Pine Barrens, I had the high beams set exactly parallel with the road: too *high* for most states. But the station's meter was expecting taller cars.

But then, an inspection shop in MA once failed the Alfa for a "cloudy" rear window, even though I told them that the soft top hadn't been up in 10 years. I borrowed a box cutter from them and cut out the rear window. Problem solved. ;)

Then there was the BMW/Alfa shop in VA Beach that failed the Alfa for a bad "blower switch".
I told them, "What blower switch? The car is normally aspirated -- no supercharger."
They were talking about the defroster fan: on an Alfa spider with the rear window cut out. ;)
"What happens if the windscreen fogs up?" "I look over it." :D

I've learned to take cars to inspection shops that know right danged well that they aren't going to be able to fix anything they find wrong -- so there's no point trying to drum up extra business.

Had one today, typical of the Brit mentality Im afraid, driving in a massive queue of traffic in the 612 at about 3mph, traffic queue going the other way stationary as we had a green light thru the roadworks, suddenly hear 'f***ing b*****d' from the driver of a loser cruiser - no reason, no warning, just pure stupidity and ignorance.

His kids in the back are waving at me as I pass smiling and chuffed to see a Ferrari - made himself look a tool in front of his kids. I didnt bother to answer him, just laughed as I drove past.

Nah, we get the stupid hostility on this side of the pond, too.

I find it ironic when people get hostile to the "rich guy" in the Ferrari ...
... when they're driving a luxo SUV that cost more than my old 328 is worth.

Exactly, I chose cars, he chose to have a family - sometimes I dream of having HIS life too.... stupid thing is, I take lots of clients and their kids for rides in the car, do wedings for em, proms, all for no reward because I like helping people achieve their dreams.... that attitude doesnt help him get by in life at all

OKAY!! It happened! It's true. Pulled up to a light and a BMW 550 pulls up next to me and I get flashed, two nice ones pressed against the glass, woman mouths "I LOVE YOUR CAR". Husband or boyfriend is driving the BMW and just shakes his head. Go figure. I have heard of this but never really believed it. Now of course my expectations are very high.

The reaction of the boyfriend shows that he is an idiot and possibly insecure. Rather than admire and appreciate the work of art that Ferrari is, he did the opposite.

Sounds like the driver was just shaking his head at what his girlfriend did. I'd have had the same reaction, only she'd have probably been riding home with the Ferrari driver after I kicked her out. LOL

Just today I was in my 575 which has Tubi's.
I was driving and pulled up to a light beside a truck. I took off normally and turned into a parking lot to grab a bite.
This truck pulled in as well. I ended up behind him in line and he says " That car has a really nice exhaust sound! It sounds great."
    I say "Thanks."
He then says "What type of car is that?"
I was a little surprised but responded "It's a Ferrari."
To which he says "Oh...it sounds nice."

I once walked out of a restaurant and a guy was leaning against my 355 talking to a girl. He kept telling her he'd give her a ride if she would go inside and have a drink with him.

I asked him if he thought the rivets on his jeans might scratch "his" paint. He said he was not worried about scratches.

I then told him that I was, and it'd be nice if he could stand up straight so I could leave--said as I got in the car and started the engine. The girl called him a SOB. I drove off.

Another time, while picking up my car from the Valet, a 10 year old asked his father what kind of car that was. Father said "Corvette." Kid said "cool."

Still another time, a 10 year old walked up and asked me if he could go for a ride. I looked that the dad who said, "I guess you are not a child-molester if you drive a car like that." I took the kid around the parking lot. When I dropped him off, he said he was going to have a car like this one day.

I would have pummeled him right there and then.

Cool. I like these stories, you may have given him some motivation to remain in school, strive for higher education, or at the very least work hard.

I lived in my current house for a little over 5 years. one of my neighbor never really say hi to us. while I was washing the 16M on last Sunday afternoon, he was walkig his dog passed my drive way and said" I thought your other car is loud enough, ( i also have a 997 TT ) now this one is even louder" I am not sure what his intention for those comments are but I just said " and faster" and I ignore him.

I don't mean the TT is faster than the 16M, I just said something back to him

Agree. What else was he supposed to do?

If my wife did that my reaction would be similar to this guy with disbelief. A Ferrari is just a car, plus this girl was in a car with somebody so I really don't get the "getting her parts out" ... what was her partner supposed to do, stop the car and ask her if she would rather get in the Ferrari and leave?

    Weird.

About a year and a half ago an inspection shop was going to fail my Mondial because it has an air horn installed. Seriously. I argued. The guy went to his "office" to check the manual and came back and said, "yep, air horns aren't allowed." I argued more and asked him to call his supervisor and explained that the car comes with air horns from the factory. he went back into his "office." When he returned a few minutes later he told me that he checked the manual again, and that air horns are allowed for certain cars. I think he was just trying to get rid of me.

6 months later I registered the car as an antique vehicle. No more inspections.
