Houston, we have a problem. My daughter has discovered the fine Bose stereo in the Porsche and now refuses to drive in the Mondial until I put a stereo capable of playing her fine collection of children's songs.

Understanding that a little girl may not appreciate the fine symphony of a flat crank V-8, I have agreed to put a legitimate system in the car. Admittedly, she didn't have to twist my arm too hard, as I occasionally like to listen to a song in the background as I cruise down a country road.

So here is where the fun starts.

    1) Everything is going to be 1980's period correct.

    2) No modifications of any kind to the interior

    3) no subwoofer.

Here is what I am thinking:

Nakamichi cassette deck (I'll use the cassette adapter to play the Ipod)

    Rockford Fosgate Punch 45 amplifier

    2 MB Quart separates.

Come on boys, those of you who were into car systems 25 years ago, rack your brain and lets come up with a stereo that would have been cool to have back when your girl friend wore leg warmers, people were dancing on the ceiling, and the Material Girl was rocking the charts.

Oh, and you don't want to disappoint the boss....

Can't help here as 25 years ago, I was 5.

I am going to sit back and watch - this is going to be an interesting thread. My first major memory of a tape-deck is my parents BenZ (sp?) box - bringing the gigantic thing into restaurants and such.

you could do a sub using a low profile sub/ box under one of the front seats...I probably have a set of ads speakers for the doors...

Where are you going to put the graphic equalizer? No Ipods allowed, you have to make mix tapes.

You're right Dave, I meant Lazerdisc!

Seriously Joe, my Sirius/XM works great with the existing Alpine stereo I have, and no new screw holes or modification was made, other than adding a cigarette lighter plug under the dash. Plus if you get a splitter, you can have the extra 12V outlet you want for the GPS you really want in there.

Unless you can find an XM player from 1986 or earlier, its OUT!!!!

As for the cigarette lighter mod, that will likely make its way into the final iteration, but more it is more likely I will replace the existing unit.

FWIW, there is an incredible audio shop in the philly area called Goodman audio. The guy used to do all the work for exotic cars back in the 80's and 90's, he recently came up out of retirement and reopened his business. I was on the phone with him today. He has a ton of goodies left over from back in the day.

So far I have sourced some NOS MB Quarts and we are looking at a Nak head unit or a vintage blaupunkt. Of particular note, he advised me that back in the day, Ferrari would insist that he install blaupunkt head units on the cars they would use for photos, press etc. The amp will likely be ADS.

I'll keep you posted. Sclja, I may be reaching out to you regarding your head unit. PM me with a number you are thinking of.

Is the underwear you wear also from the 80's to keep it period correct when you drive? ;)

Boy, I thought I was stuck in the 80's. You, my friend, are way stuck.

I did this to my 308. I wanted the look up front of an 82 model with the Blaupunkt cassette head unit, the Blaupunkt ball speakers some dealers installed and the same Blaupunkt eq they used to mount below the a/c vents.

So that's what I did. I have the same Blaupunkt tape deck AND eq that I saw as a kid in 4 different 308s (both found on eBay in prestine unused in-the-box condition!) and I put Anthony Gallo (sp?) dome speakers in the back which look exactly like the Blaupunkts but are 1000X better than those old crappy 15 watt things.

Up front I have a 400 watt Alpine 4 channel driving the Gallos and a pair of 100 watt RMS componants in the doors. A 6 disc Alpine CD changer is run in the antenna and the control is mounted in the little cubby hole by my left knee. No one notices it there but me. The changer is under the front hood on the spare tire next to the amp. CD's are fine with me. I just burn what I want and load them up as needed. I am not tearing all this back out and starting over just so, instead of maybe 90 songs, I can have 34,000 on mp3. Screw that.

Sounds perfect, I can hear it on the highway with the top out at speed and it looks bone-1980's stock.

    I love it like this

The way I figure it, anyone can install a modern system in this car. What fun would that be!

I am having a blast reaching back to my teen years and sourcing the equipment I drooled over then, but couldn't afford! The fact that it would still be concours correct is even more entertaining.

Dr.--I love what you did with the 308!!! Great work!

I had a Nak that was very similar to that- it was a cassette with CD button that I had connected to a Sony portable CD player via RCA cables- the CD player was mounted (I think with velcro) right on the rear hump between the rear seats on my '78 911SC. That cassette player was crap- I paid I think over $600 for it (in around 1990 dollars- a ton of money me then...heck still a lot now :) ) Anyway, I almost always used the CD player and hardly used the cassette...then I used the cassette one day and it stopped working- it was literally about 2 days after the 6 month warranty expired. I called Nakamichi to see if they could still do anything- I maybe had used the cassette deck for about 4 hours of listening time- and they didn't offer anything, not even a partial credit.

This happened over 20 years ago (before there was the internet and I could rant about it) but seeing the picture of that unit totally reminded me of the episode. Remember marketing/customer service 101- do something good for a customer and maybe they will tell 1-2 people, do something really bad they will tell 20...well now I'm finally getting my story out :) I never purchased anything made by Nakimichi again!

The system I put into a different 911 in the mid 1990's but didn't have the money for in the '78 911 I had in the late 1980's was an Alpine head unit (by then it was a CD player in the head not a cassette ;) ), ADS Plate speakers in the rear, infinity speakers up front and an Adcom amp with a little fan like a computer has on it (this amp may be more 1990's than 1980's though)! The ADS plate speakers were marketed for the porsches and BMWs in the 70s-80s due to thin design- they were easy to install, looked good and sounded like crap (no bass). They were likely marketed for Ferraris of the era as well- my whole system would have been a good system to put in mondial/3x8, porsche 911, lotus esprit- name your favorite 1980's sports cars (again you'd have to pick a period amp vs adcom to be 1980's-correct)!

The dealers were free to use anything they liked in the US at least. Most were outfitted with Alpine, Nakamichi and Blaupunkt. Mine has a Nakamichi.

thanks Joe, I have an old Sony cd player. it takes two cd formats and it does not read mp3's. My speakers are dead, I want to replace them first before the radio. But I am like you, I don't want anything but somthing from the era. Thats why I want to be sure before I remove the radio. I don't remember if cds were out in 89.

I have a NAK as well and it sounds fine to me. I can totally hear my radio with the top down at speeds of 80+

When i was a kid in the 80's my friends dad had highend audio equipment and i always admired his Nakamichi's so the first thing i did, when i could afford it, was to go out and buy NAK stuff, it seems fitting to have one in my Ferrari and also seems to be a pattern in my life, i purchase what was once top of the line, 20 years later.

If i can get behind my radio i'm going to install an FM modulator for my XM, that is when i get back in the seat of my car one day

Ferrari did not offer a stereo in the Mondial line circa 1981-1993. Any audio system was installed by the dealer or owner.

FYI, I tried using XM with the FM modulator, and it was horrible. The pulses from the ignition coils were totally interfering with the signal. I bought a small XM adaptor for I think $40 to allow it to be plugged directly into the antenna input of my stereo, and viola!, sounds great, even with the dealer installed 20+ year old Alpine and the Mondial cruising at 3500 rpm.
