Well I've heard them described as 180 degree V12s,so I would reckon that would comply.

the boxer has it's engine listed as a 180 degree V12, but I think the spirit of the thing is to limit it to the older trucks, the Boxer was a quantum leap in thinking back then

"Boxer" refers to a horizontally opposed engine with 180 degree crank, so that the pistons travel towards each other on the intake and power strokes and away on the compression and exhaust. A BMW motorcycle flat twin is a boxer engine.

The Ferrari flat 12 is not a boxer. The (Fiat) marketing people adopted the label, not the Ferrari engineers.

The F1 application was low CoG but ground effects killed the idea, as a V engine allows wider venturis under the car for more downforce.

As for the 2 degree story, I would be amazed if the BB road car engine has any common parts with the 3 litre F1 engine, they certainly don't look alike. But I'm happy to be corrected. :)

<splutter> the Boxer was a rushed catch up to the Countach, which thoroughly out-exotic'ed Ferrari, and cleverly put the gearbox at the front and ran a drive shaft to the back. That wasn't possible for Ferrari, cos the cylinders are in the way, so they put the gearbox under the engine and forever were behind the handling 8-ball.

If you've ever seen a bare Countach chassis, its an engineering work of art. A bare BB is a stretched 246 and not nearly as strong or stiff.

are you saying the Countach is a better engineered car than the BB ?

I liked the simplistic way the Lambo guys transfered the power to the rear wheels with an engine the wrong way round but surely the way the BB was arranged made more sense and would be a stronger drivetrain.

I think we should invite Dr Bellei to this discussion and see what he thinks :)

I have to find the manuscrpit that talks of the V12 F1 thing, its moments like this we need napolis to tell us the correct story

in the words of phil, its not exactly the same but very similar.....much like a F40 windscreen is the same but not exactly like a 308GTB

yes, better engineered but underfunded development.

Boxer drivetrain is weak as p*ss. Ever dropped the clutch in a BB or TR? The diff carriers exit stage left and right. Crikey, they self destruct when driven gently!

    That's why an LP400 is a $400-500K car and a BB is $150K.

Countach's went to sh1te later on of course, I'm only defending the original "low body" cars. And a Daytona drivers better and is faster than any of them. :)

perhaps as a race car,my old car ran stiff springs, hard shockers and thick sway bars and R spec tyres for years, yet the gaps and body were perfect no rattles nothing of concern.
