Up here in Maine, Ferraris are without a doubt quite rare. Since taking ownership of my ’85 GTS in March of this year, it’s obvious that this beautiful car attracts some attention. Some people might take a second look as we drive by; others might point, wave, yell, stop what they are doing, drop their jaws or follow behind us taking pictures of her from a car much more expensive than my 308.

I’ve mentioned to my wife several times, after seeing some of the reactions people have to the car, in a small way, we might possibly affect and change how their day was going to transpire had they not seen us drive by. I’m not trying to be arrogant here; it’s not me, but the Ferrari.

Maybe she will inspire someone to finally make a concerted effort to save up for their own, or perhaps cause an argument between a financially stressed couple about how their money should be spent. Maybe it will make the road flag holder smile and reminisce about how much fun he had in his high school years in the early 80’s when he would see the same car every Thursday night at 8 pm.

It seems that sometimes in life small details can alter the course of our lives. E.g. If I hadn’t had keep a return address from an envelope of a card given to my Mother from an old girlfriend in 1987, I wouldn’t have married and then subsequently divorced her. However; if all that had not taken place, I never would have met the awesome wife that I have now. Or maybe, if you hadn’t picked the wrong check out line at the grocery store you would have missed that guy who ran the red light down the street and t-boned you.

Again, I’m not trying to be arrogant, all I’m saying is that if I could do the same drive at the same moment in time in 2 different cars; the people who noticed my red Ferrari from the first ride, probably would have not noticed my black Tahoe on the second ride; and given that, I feel they might have had a completely different day then they would have had otherwise.

Like I said, affecting lives with every drive! What say you?

I don't think it's arrogant to think that your Ferrari is affecting people in different ways. That is one of the many things that is so special about these cars. Someone could drive a brand new fully loaded $125,000 Mercedes sedan and very few people are even going to give it a second a look. However a $30,000 25 year old Ferrari can have a profound effect on people all around.

My exposure to Ferrari was much more common than your average kid, because from the time I was born my dad owned a few different Ferraris. But I still have quite vivid memories of any time I saw another Ferrari on the road. My childhood friends still fondly remember their experiences with my father's Ferraris as well, they are now all mostly in their 30's, but they still remember back to when they were 10 and they first got to ride in his car, or when I drove his 355 to high school for the first time.

There are plenty of cars that are more practical, cheaper, higher performance, etc, than your average used Ferrari, but very few have quite the same profound effect on people.

A few years ago, I had to stop as road work crews were working on the side of this narrow road and had blocked both directions. It was a quiet road so there wasn't anyone waiting on the other side. The flag guy - probably in his 20s - saw the Ferrari badge and his jaw dropped. He then motioned to the other guys to look, so they stopped working and opened the road up. The flag guy was rolling his arm to wave me through, so I wound the engine up and lit the tires up. Further down the road, I could see in my rear view mirror they were quite pleased with the show :)
