If you wanted to play sports AND get a good education, where would you go? Let's assume you have some brains and won't play pro ball in any sport.

Northwestern - great school, great city

Harvard - another great school, great academic history

Houston - simple - I'd want to learn the oil biz.

It really depends on what you want for a major. Without duplicating any:

    Engineering: Stanford, Michigan, Georgia Tech
    Journalism: Missouri, Northwestern, Columbia
    Pre-Med: Michigan State, Washington, Wisconsin
    Pre-Law: Yale, Harvard, Duke
    General Studies: Texas, LSU, Florida

Please don't make the question more difficult than it is, I spoke in generalities.

I had Stanford on my list, but I deemed it 'too easy' (to pick).

I also liked Cal Poly-SLO and Pepperdine, and UC Santa Cruz as well...

We have been better academically in the past ten years than we have been in sports, generally speaking. Miami is currently ranked #38 overall (academically) by the annual US News college rankings. It is a pretty well received degree from a smallish private school. For some odd reason people think it is a state school. I would rather be ranked #108 like FSU and have a better football team.

To answer your question I would go with Stanford, then UNC, then Virginia Tech.
    :)

Can't disagree with any of the comments but suprised Penn State not listed, especially for engineering. Fact, one in four engineers came from PSU in US.

I bet the boosters are paying the regular students too in order to increase their academic rankings. :)

Stanford - great academic & athletic programs, great weather, & tough to beat the power/money/smarts of Silicon Valley.

Harvard - simply can't beat the cache that comes with the name but I'd hate the weather.

One of the service academies, probably Air Force - great education, compete at a high level in athletics (ie not the Ivy League), maybe learn to fly planes, and of course serve our great country! Inspired partially by Chad Hennings. Plus no school loans and I'd have a job lined up when I graduate! :D

I don't want to be politically incorrect, so I won't comment on the current group of students. I will jsut say they aren't in the same group that populated the campus when I went there from 1985-1990. We had the best of both worlds. it was sun tan U and our football team just totally kicked the crap out of most teams we played. No mercy in this dojo! Now we are polite and studious, yuck!

I wouldn't mind going to an Ivy League school to play hockey.
