Has anyone come across any 355s that have had other ferrari engines installed, if so could you post up any links please.

I have a 355 project thats missing its drivetrain, so an excellent opportunity for an upgrade.

360 and even 430 engines and gearboxes seem to be more plentiful and are a similar price to the 355 replacements but I am not sure if the available bay space will allow the transplants and whether the driveshafts will line up.

Look forward to finding out the alternatives, I realise anything can be done if you have an open budget, but I am looking for cost equivalent options.

Also if anyone has a ferrari drivetrain available in the UK please let me know

    cheers

If you are on any sort of a budget then the only answer is stick to the original engine (buy a wreck if you can)

Projects like the one you describe generally become expensive quickly - even when dealing with cheaper cars that have plentiful parts available...

To answer your question, I have seen the TR motor in a 355.

That's kinda like asking "Is there any way to make a 355 not sound so good?"

The 360 and later trannys would appear to be too long. I've measured and believe it would stick out past the bumper. So, I think I would plan to use the 355 trans behind whatever motor you choose. It'll be a very interesting project. The later the motor, the more horsepower. Who cares how it sounds if it's faster! You can never have enough horsepower! Best of luck, report your progress!

The gearbox poking out the back would not be an issue as its not going to be a stock 355 again, its whether by lining up the driveshafts it pushes the engine to far forward into the fuel tank area, as the 355 engine appears to sit further back than the others due to the configeration of the gearbox.

Im hoping someone else has done all the hard work and already made a start or completed a similar engine swap so I can take a look at the options

A 360 would probably be the most straightforward and the ONLY engine that I would support if you must make a change. The F355 is special for many reasons but the 5 valve engine is it's most unique attribute, leave that intact.

    My opinion.

I was contemplating putting a 360 engine in my 348 a few years. Changed my mind after seeing a 360 that has it's innards taken out. It would take too much time and money.

Didn't someone on this forum put a 4 cylinder engine in a 348 a few years ago?

thanks, nice idea but for this project the engine needs to be from a ferrari, and ideally of a more modern vintage and of higher horsepower than the original engine

I would install a Carobu built 355 engine if it were my car. Not cheap, I'm sure, but nothing will be!

Well if the 360 unit is too long remove the gastank and run the engine closer to the firewall. That would improve balance. Then run a fuel cell up front...but that would mess the balance some as the fule burned off. Overall it could make a great racecar.

great minds think alike, that is an option I had thought of and hope someones already done something like that for me to take a look at.

Would make servicing easier as well if the tank space was cleared out.

Egads, this thread should be retitled "How Do I Make an Already Expensive to Maintain Car, an Even More Expensive Investment and Costly to Maintain?"
