    Apparently a guy working closely for the FIA was in charge of all the new F1 engine designs and all teams had to submit their blueprints to him. Now he quit and is joining a 3rd party company manufacturing...you guessed it...turbo charged F1 engines.

    The teams are apparently furious and up in arms, but there seems little that can be done about it.

    I haven't read this story anywhere, but a friend told me, he found a link in some motosport magazine. Anybody else seen/heard/read this?

    Hmm, sorry in that case.

    I haven't seen it in any of my fav German newspapers nor did Speed ever mention it.

    Don't be sorry...the whole thing still sucks a bit.

    The end result was most people felt that the all new technology would negate any advantage that might be gained from current knowledge.

    I have no opinion on the subject.

    Actually, there is a lot that can be done! For instance--keep the 2.4L V8s.

    True, but then we won't see the "reset to zero" effect the new turbo engines will have. As a Ferrari fan I don't want to see the Renault dominance continuing. A fresh formula is the best way to reshuffle the deck of cards.

    Geez, I completely missed that. I know there were lots of discussions about the new engine formula, but I didn't catch the angle of the "espionage" case (for lack of a better term for the involuntary knowledge transfer).

    But it's not Renault dominance, it's Adrian Newey dominance. The Renault engine isn't as underpowered as Red Bull and Genii like to make out, but it's certainly no more powerful than the Ferrari or Mercedes engine. The different in the Red Bull domination is the car... and Seb Vettel, of course ;). Further, there's nothing that gets Adrian Newey more excited than a fresh formula - change up the chassis/aero rules, and for the first year or two a Newey car will be at the head of the pack.

    I agree but I'm thinking/hoping that a Renault turbo will break for a couple of years during which Ferrari could squeeze in some WDCs before the Newey/RB/Vettel domination continues

    And at some point Newey will go into retirement. Hopefully

    Why does the FIA need a Powerplant director?, or whatever his role was called.

    This is the problem. All that should matter is engine size. The FIA have caused this because they have over restricted engine design by specifying bore centres and way too many other things.

    Get rid of the over restriction and you get rid of this potential issue (because blue prints will not have to be studied by anybody from the FIA).

    Not true. Ferrari was so successful because of timing (pretty much every Ferrari WDC is won because of "timing", and that is why I do not consider them to be the best F1 team). It's always like this. Newey was busy building up the infrastructure that RedBull needed. Only once that was done was he able to produce a top flight contender.

    This also points out that it takes more than one person to be successful.

    Much will change between now and when the motors are actually ready for use. At best, he may have some ideas but not much. During this new engine era I am personally more interested in the new bodywork surrounding the motors and placement of certain items. Aero is key and this new engine reg opens a giant can of possibilities for the cleverest of the clever to dig their hands into.
