    Ghiblisti,

Time to revive this thread a little bit.
Pitty that the Ghibli subjects are spread all over this forum, compared to e.g. the Khamsin where everything is concentrated in one thread.

A friend of ours came to see us for dinner and to our surprise he showed up in his Ghibli (SS #1984) an original Dutch registered car and the Amsterdam RAI show car. He is the second owner only!
At the time of the show the car was yellow but the 1st owner, a successful industrialist, thought that would be bit too much so he had the car changed to white. During the 1st owner’s possession of the car the car has been resprayed once more, this time in light blue, after that back to white again. All these layers of paint are probably contributing to the fact that the car is in remarkably good condition!
Our friend was little in doubt what to do with the vehicle: restore or just bring it technically and cosmetically in good order. I advised him the last option because the car is just too good to restore. And I think a car with the right patina is nicer than a fully restored example. In addition to this he has some other babies to take care of and like most of us: no unlimited funding......
We decided to take my SS out of the cave too and took turns in driving eachother’s cars for comparison.
Instantly noticeable was his slightly longer rear axle; lower revs giving it a little more of an “American” car feeling. Mechanically the car felt sound and a great experience to drive a non restored ~40 years old Ghibli!
My car, one of the very last, is equipped with straight end pipes, our friend’s car with these very typical angled Ghibli end pipes. I must admit I am going to reconsider to modify my end pipes… As from my time as a youngster these end pipes have always been sticking out to me as a Ghibli trade mark!
The car was also still standing quite well on all fours. I dislike Ghibli’s hanging in their rear springs, makes them very sloppy and does not contribute to their class.
unfortunately I erased the pics on the engine bay and interior, have to make up for that one day.

    Ciao,

    Bart

    Hi,

I came across these photo's when organizing my files. This car is locally believed to be the Maserati Ghibli that the Shah gave his nephew after he graduated Harvard and deciding to join the armed forces (apparently after asking for the Miura SVJ and being politely turned down). I may be wrong as most of our information is based on hearsay, so any information to the contrary would be appreciated.

The car has less than 900 km on the odometer and is currently in the local museum. The pictures are from a car show held by the Classic Car Committee of the Automobile Federation in 2006 at Saad Abad Palace. It was one of the rare times that the museum allowed some of its cars to be brought out for display outside the museum.

As you can see, the car is so new that the "red dot " stickers are still on the tires.

    Enjoy,

    Best Wishes

    Ramin

    Ramin,
great photos! Thanks for posting them.

But -when the bonnet is open why didn`t you take a shot of the VIN-plate? This would disclose more details about the car!

Ramin - great to see a very original Ghibli such as this one! That you for posting the photos.

Walter .... there is a chain around the cars. Of course that would have not stopped you from taking close up photos :)

Notice that the Ghiblis are being advertised as a 5 liter, even though in 1969 most US Ghiblis were 4.7 liters. I am guessing that Maserati announced the availability of the 4.9 liter engine in 1969 but ran into delays getting the engine approved to meet USA emission specs.

Test drive a Ghibli spyder and "I promise you'll never be the same ...."; some things were true then and are true now.

    Ivan,
Also notice Bob is advertising a Sebring which would have been long out of production by 1969.

    Joe,

I just noticed that the Indy is not mentioned; which is strange. Could this ad actually be from 1968, before the Indy was announced? But if that is the case how did Bob get a hold of a Ghibli spyder? The ad makes it sound as though he has the 5 liter version of the spyder for test drives. But let's remember this is advertisement, which is many times very different from reality :)

    Hi Ivan,

I have a copy of a fax in my possession by Ermano Cozza stating that Maserati delivered 4,9 liters as 4,7's as early as late '66. An early Spider with a "5000" engine does not surprise me.

    Ghiblisti,

we just came back from a marvelous Maserati Club International meeting in Austria. Well organized, great atmosphere and gorgeous weather! The Ghibli performed really well. Cruising through Germany with speeds up to 190kmh with short bursts up to 200kmh but then the car gets a little light on the steering. A real long legged animal that loves long distance travelling.
We had 110 cars together of which were 37 classic Maseratis, more over:
9 Ghibli coupes and 2 Spiders (1 a Campana conversion)
The scenery challenged me to make some portraits of my sky blue desert storm...
    Hope you enjoy them too!

Thanks for organizing this super event Robert Simetzberger and (limited) staff!

    Ciao,

    Bart

    Bart,
despite the great weather I heared a different story:

    1. no roadbook
    2. driving on much crowded roads
    3. "hillclimb": 1 test-run, 1 "race" - End of the story!
    4. all drinks had to be paid by the entrants (110 cars = approx. 195 people! All Int. meetings normally include all beverages at the meals!).

Seems that the logistics were a little two much for the few organizers - this is what I was told.

    Ciao!

    Hi Walter,

Pity you were not there, would be more appropriate to voice your own opinion.
I bet it has to do with the optimist and the pessimist:
The pessimist says:"All women are bad!"
The optimist: he hopes for it.....

There was a road book but when you plan for 70 vehicles and 110 turn up it is a challenge and the roads do get a bit crowded. On the return trip to the hotel we had a smaller group and had a load of fun, probably went a bit beyond the limits....
To put the alcoholic drinks on ones own expense, is a good thing to me, it limits the too thirsty guys. For the gala diner they were included, by the way.

Meeting with friends and new people that share at least one passion in a great atmosphere and location made this another great rendez vous to us and many more people we talked to!

    Regards,

    Bart

I am not aware of a special website yet but here are some pictures of the meeting with at least one Ghibli on it....
As a friend of mine put it: A Ghibli in this meeting is almost a commodity.....

    Hello,
I Just want to tell you that there is a nice little german article about the Ghibli on "Zwischengas.com" with pictures of #115 818.

    Link:

    http://www.zwischengas.com/de/FT/fahrzeugberichte/Maserati-Ghibli-der-schoenste-und-teuerste-Gran-Turismo-der-spaeten-Sechzigerjahre.html

But I wonder what happened to its front and the bumper, it looks a bit bulky!
    maybe a bad repaired crash?

they tell the engine is "drehzahlfest" wich means it is stable to high rpm.
I thougt the oppside is right?

On that page you can even find the german comparative test between the Ghibli, the Miura, Detomaso and the Monteverdi from the magazine "Hobby" in 1970 when you are logged in.

    regards, Hendrik
